Toyota FJ Cruiser is Polarizing Vehicle (That We Love)

We spotlight a lot of vehicles on our Toyota blog, but one we haven't spent a lot of time on is the Toyota FJ Cruiser. As pointed out in this article, the FJ Cruiser isn't a car that appeals to everyone...but it's not meant to.

True, it may not be the most fuel efficient in the Toyota lineup (see the Toyota Prius), but it is one of the most unique in performance and style. In fact, it is this reviewer's favorite vehicle in the Toyota's line-up because partly because of its retro style (that and the extremely bold blue and yellow colors it comes in).

"Boisterous colours aside, the FJ Cruiser not only sparkles on the street, but shines off road."

If you need a vehicle you can take off smooth, simple roads of civilization, then you need to take a look at the Toyota FJ Cruiser.

According to the 2013 FJ Cruiser brochure you can, "Call it street cred. Minus the street...Solitude. Silence. Space. For some, nothing lifts the spirit quite like a visit to remote wilderness. The 2013 FJ Cruiser was engineered with precisely those people in mind."

What's the first thing you need to go off-road? Tires.

"First, there were the LT265/75R16 BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A Tires with unique 16-inch black TRD Beadlock-style alloy wheels. You can’t miss these! They come in handy should you find yourself off the beaten path and perhaps want to forage a path for yourself."

The multi-informational display that shows the outside temperature and inclinometer. Also useful is the roof rack and off-road lights with rock rails.

"Under the FJ’s hood is a 4.0 Litre, six-cylinder engine that has an output of 260 horsepower and 271 foot-pounds of torque. It’s matched with a five-speed automatic transmission or an available six-speed manual transmission. The FJ comes with Toyota’s part-time four-wheel drive system along with vehicle stability control, active traction control, an automatic disconnecting differential, and a two-speed transfer case. To protect its underside while roughing it in the bush, there’s engine, fuel tank and transfer case protector plates."

It can also two up 5,000 pounds and has almost 28 cubic feet of storage space.

"Twenty-five-degree grades. Frame-bending boulders. Dizzying drop-offs. The sort of challenges nature presents when you tackle trails like Rubicon or Moab’s Poison Spider Mesa. But five decades of off-road experience has given FJ Cruiser the capability to handle them. Its V6 engine churns out 260 hp and 271 lb.-ft. of torque, in part thanks to Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i)."
