New Series of Documentary Shorts from Toyota TeenDrive365 Explores the Emotional Rite of Passage When a Teen Receives Their Driver’s License

Award-winning Getty Images Reportage Photojournalists Capture Three Families’ Journeys;
Stories Underscore Important Role Parents Play in Teen Driving Safety

Excitement. Fear. Loss of Control. Pride. Every parent of a teenager can relate to the rollercoaster of emotions that occurs when their child receives their driver’s license.

In a new series of documentary shorts, Toyota has partnered with three award-winning Getty Images Reportage photojournalists to explore this major rite of passage through the experiences of three families in Los Angeles, Boston and St. Petersburg, Fla. The series is part ofTeenDrive365, Toyota’s comprehensive teen safety initiative that helps parents and teens become safer drivers together. You can watch the videos at www.TeenDrive365.com.

“As the mother of two teenagers, I understand first-hand the range of emotions that parents can experience when their teen receives their driver’s license,” said Marjorie Schussel, Corporate Marketing Director for Toyota. “Even though the families featured in Toyota’s TeenDrive365series all have unique stories to share, the common thread is that each parent is deeply involved in their teen’s journey to get their license.”

In the video shorts, a teenager’s new driver’s license represents different things for each family:
  • In Boston, the Rabinowitz family’s story highlights the excitement – and the tension – that can accompany this rite of passage. Teenager Erez is eager to get his license, while his parents are more reflective, hoping that he will not text and drive as they both do. This milestone is especially complicated for Erez’s father, who survived a life-altering car crash as a child that badly injured his parents.
  • In St. Petersburg, Fla., teenager De’Qonton’s new license represents freedom, achievement and the opportunity to broaden his life experiences. His parents share a mixture of pride and measured caution, while his younger brother has a new reason to aspire to be more like him.
  • In Los Angeles, the Vaught family’s story poignantly explores the ways in which teenage daughter Chloe’s new license helps her parents begin to view her as an adult, such as when she drives her mother to her grandmother’s funeral.
The shorts were created by award-winning Getty Images Reportage photojournalists Sara Lewkowicz, (St. Petersburg,) Ben Lowy (Los Angeles) and Shaul Schwarz (Boston).

The new series builds on TeenDrive365’s other resources, which include online tools, expert advice, local events and social media that help parents model safer driving behaviors for their children. The focus on parents as role models is based on research from a national study from Toyota’s Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI). The study found a significant correlation between how parents and their teens drive, suggesting that parents are the biggest influence on how a teen will behave behind the wheel.

Since Toyota TeenDrive365’s launch in November 2013, millions of people have engaged with its online and in-person resources. Earlier this year, the program introduced a new distracted driving simulator that uses Oculus Rift, the latest virtual reality technology, to bring the dangers of distracted driving to life for parents and teens.

The new campaign was developed in partnership with digital agency 360i and Getty Images Reportage. This collaboration marks the first time Getty Images Reportage has partnered with a brand to produce a series of short form multimedia documentaries.

Fueled by Bullsh*t

Toyota Taps Morgan Spurlock to Direct First Video in “Fueled by Everything” Series

Sometimes reality stinks. Toyota has tapped award-winning documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock to show how calling hydrogen fuel cell vehicles “bullsh*t” isn’t far from the truth.

“Fueled by Bullsh*t” is the first online video in a multi-part “Fueled by Everything” series aimed to educate a broad audience about the innovative ways hydrogen fuel can be made from renewable sources. Spurlock directed the 3-minute piece which features a dairy farmer and mechanical engineer as they follow cow manure  from a mooing supply source to its ultimate use in powering the hydrogen fuel cell electric Toyota Mirai.

“This project gave us the opportunity to dive into a world that most people don’t understand but has the potential to change our world,” said Spurlock.  “Witnessing manure, something most of us view as being pretty disposable, being transformed into hydrogen fuel to power a car was pretty remarkable.  I think this short film is pretty compelling evidence of what could be possible in the years ahead.”

Beyond high quality dung, hydrogen can be manufactured from other renewable energy sources like solar, wind and biogas from landfills. These production methods can result in a domestic and locally sourced fuel that powers the Mirai while emitting only water vapor from the tailpipe.

The multi-series video campaign is launching through the Toyota Mirai website (www.toyota.com/mirai) and additional digital properties with paid online media support.  The Toyota Mirai site will also feature a deeper dive into the scientific process of creating hydrogen fuel, with explanations from scientists and experts in the field.  This content will also appear across Toyota social and media partner sites, including Forbes.com, YouTube and Hulu.

“We’re putting hydrogen in the spotlight for its exciting potential as a renewable fuel source,” said Bob Carter, senior vice president, automotive operations, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. “This is the beginning of the road for hydrogen, but we see the potential and we’re making a long-term investment in the future.”

The four-door, mid-sized Toyota Mirai delivers performance similar to traditional internal combustion engines – re-fueling in about five minutes and a range of up to 300 miles on a full tank. The Mirai will go on sale in California later this year.

Toyota’s “Fueled by Everything” campaign was created with creative agency partner Droga5. To see the video and information about Toyota’s commitment to fuel cell technology, visitwww.toyota.com/mirai/fueledbyeverything.html.

Mirai Takes the Stage at the National Mall

Toyota Exclusive Automotive Partner of Earth Day 45th Anniversary Celebration
Mirai Display Kicks off Month of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Education

Fifteen years ago, a little hybrid no one knew rolled onto the National Mall to celebrate Earth Day. That hybrid – the Toyota Prius. Tomorrow, nearing the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, Toyota will return to Washington, D.C., to showcase yet another revolutionary technology, the hydrogen fuel cell electric Toyota Mirai. Toyota has partnered with Earth Day Network to sponsor the Global Citizen 2015 Earth Day celebration, April 17-19, featuring leading environmental voices, government leaders, star-studded performances and a Mirai activation. The celebration marks the beginning of a month of fuel cell features and festivities for Toyota.

"The Toyota Mirai represents a turning point in automotive history,” said Bob Carter, senior vice president, automotive operations, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. “After more than 20 years of research and development, we are excited to bring Mirai to American driveways. Earth Day 2015 is a great platform to educate the public about hydrogen fuel cell technology and the potential of hydrogen as a future fuel.”

For many Earth Day celebration attendees, this will be the first up close and personal look at the Mirai. The vehicle combines hydrogen and oxygen to create electricity that powers the electric motor. Water vapor is the only emission. The Mirai will go on sale in California later this year.

"Toyota has been a committed partner in creating solutions and momentum for a cleaner, better planet," said Kathleen Rogers, president of Earth Day Network. "We are proud to help educate about the possibilities for fuel cell technology and advocate around a shared vision for the environment.”

Beyond the celebration on the National Mall, Toyota will use the month of April to engage and educate customers about fuel cell technology and hydrogen power, including events in New York and Los Angeles, and digital activities to converse with skeptics and advocates alike.

  • Toyota will help New Yorkers mark Earth Day with an interactive display at Union Square Park on April 19.
  • Hollywood celebrities will gather for laughs and an opportunity to learn about the Mirai during Waterkeeper Alliance’s “Keep it Clean,” a star-studded evening of comedy on April 22.
The zero emission Toyota Mirai is a four-door, mid-size sedan with performance similar to traditional internal combustion engines – re-fueling in about five minutes and traveling up to 300 miles on a full tank. Lexus and Toyota Roll-Out Low-Cost Automated Braking Safety Packages

  • Toyota Safety Sense and Lexus Safety System-Plus Raise The Bar On Automated Driver-Assist
  • Packages Available On Nearly All Models and Trim Levels By End of 2017
The world’s first compact crossover sport utility vehicle (SUV) and the world’s first luxury crossover SUV are helping to bring advanced safety technology to the mass market; raising the bar and lowering the price.  The move is a major stride towards Toyota’s vision of a mobility future that improves safety and is more convenient for everyone, bringing a package of automated driver assist technologies closer to the mainstream.

At separate press conferences Wednesday and Thursday at the New York Auto Show, Toyota will reveal its first-ever RAV4 Hybrid SUV, while Lexus unveils its all-new fourth-generation RX luxury crossover SUV.  Both debuts will mark the arrival of new, multi-feature, integrated safety packages, each anchored by automated pre-collision braking and offered at a price dramatically below comparable systems across the auto industry.

“Taking high-level driver assist to the next level, the safety packages will be offered as a very-low-cost option and will be systematically introduced across nearly all U.S. Toyota and Lexus models and trim levels, top-to-bottom, by the end of 2017,” said Jim Lentz, President and CEO Toyota Motor North America. “Pushing these systems across our lineup, as quickly as possible, can help protect people in the event of a crash.  More importantly it will help prevent some crashes from ever happening in the first place.”

Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) and Lexus Safety System+ (LSS+) are designed to support the driver’s awareness, decision making and vehicle operation over a wide range of speeds.  Packaged together in an integrated system, their features help address three key areas of accident protection: preventing or mitigating rear collisions, keeping drivers within their lane, and enhancing road safety during night time driving.  The systems are intended to address commonly occurring crash types according to traffic accident statistical analyses.

First announced in Japan this past November, both packages reflect Toyota’s desire to make safety technology available to a wider range of new car buyers. TSS will be offered in the form of two packages:  Toyota Safety Sense C for compact cars and TSS P for mid-sized and premium models will be available as an optional accessory from approximately $300 and $500, respectively – a price point unheard of for this array of safety technologies. Lexus Safety System+ aims to further expand the use of these systems across luxury models, integrating highly-effective active safety features into an optional accessory priced from approximately $500 to $635.

“At Toyota, we believe that the ultimate desire of a society that values mobility should be the eventual elimination of traffic fatalities and injuries,” said Bob Carter, Senior Vice President – Automotive Operations at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. Inc. “Studies indicate that advanced active safety technologies can have a profound e?ect on automotive safety.  Toyota is proud to expand the availability of these technologies – and to do so at an excellent value proposition for our customers as well.”

TSS will initially be available on the RAV4 and Avalon, and three additional models which will be announced later this year. LSS+ will initially be available on RX, and four additional models to be announced later this year. Both packages will provide an added layer of safety capability on top of Toyota’s existing Star Safety System, a suite of six key safety technologies that are included as standard on every new vehicle.

TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE

The Toyota Safety Sense C package features three proprietary active safety technologies, and combines a camera and laser radar for enhanced performance and reliability. The package can help prevent or mitigate collisions in a wide range of vehicle speeds.

Pre-collision System (PCS)

PCS uses a camera and laser radar to detect objects ahead of the vehicle.  When the system determines there is a possibility of collision it prompts the driver to brake with an audio and visual alert. If the driver notices the hazard and brakes, the system provides additional braking force. If the driver fails to brake in a set time, the system automatically applies the brakes, reducing speed by approximately 19 mph *1 in order to prevent or mitigate the collision. The operational range of PCS covers speeds at which at least 80 percent of rear-end collisions occur (i.e. relative speeds of between approximately 7 – 50 mph).

Lane Departure Alert (LDA)

LDA uses a camera to detect visible white and yellow lane markings. If the system determines that the vehicle is starting to deviate from the lane, LDA alerts the driver with an audio and visual alert.

Automatic High Beam (AHB)

AHB helps enhance forward visibility during nighttime driving. It uses a camera to detect the headlights of oncoming vehicles and the tail lights of vehicles ahead, and then automatically switches between high beams and low beams so as not to dazzle other drivers.

Toyota Safety Sense P combines a camera and millimeter-wave radar for enhanced performance and reliability. In addition to the three active safety technologies included in the Toyota Safety Sense C package, the Pre-collision System offered with this package also includes a pedestrian detection function. In addition, Toyota Safety Sense P offers Radar Cruise Control functionality.  (see below)

Pedestrian Pre-collision System

This system uses millimeter-wave radar and a camera to help detect pedestrians in certain conditions in addition to vehicles. To help prevent or mitigate collisions, the system activates an audio and visual alert in addition to brake assist, followed by automated braking if the driver does not brake in a set time. Automated braking operates at relative speeds of between 7- 50 mph for potential collisions with pedestrians, and can reduce speed by approximately 19 mph*1. For potential collisions with vehicles, the enhanced PCS system included with the Toyota Safety Sense P package operates at relative speeds of between 7 mph and the vehicle's top speed, reducing speed by approximately 25 mph*2.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

On highways, Radar Cruise Control uses millimeter-wave radar to detect preceding vehicles and determine their speed. It then is designed to adjust vehicle speed (within a set range) to help maintain a pre-set distance between vehicles. By using a forward-facing camera and millimeter-wave radar to monitor vehicles merging into or out of the lane, Radar Cruise Control helps maintain smooth acceleration and deceleration while driving.

LEXUS SAFETY SYSTEM +

Lexus Safety System + integrates several of Lexus’s existing active safety technologies: under certain conditions the Pre-Collision System (PCS) helps prevent and mitigate collisions; Lane Departure Alert (LDA) helps prevent vehicles from departing from their lanes; and Automatic High Beam (AHB) helps ensure enhanced forward visibility during nighttime driving. As part of a multi-faceted approach to active safety, the Lexus Safety System + package combines millimeter-wave radar with a camera, achieving high reliability and performance.

Pedestrian Pre-collision System

This system uses millimeter-wave radar and a camera to detect pedestrians in addition to vehicles. To help prevent or mitigate collisions, the system activates an audio and visual alert in addition to brake assist, followed by automated braking if the driver does not brake in time. Automated braking operates at relative speeds of between 7 – 50 mph for potential collisions with pedestrians, and can reduce speed by approximately 19 mph*1. For potential collisions with vehicles, the PCS system operates at relative speeds of between 7 mph and the vehicle's top speed, reducing speed by approximately 25 mph*2.

Lane Departure Alert (LDA)

LDA uses a camera to detect visible white and yellow lane markings. If the vehicle starts to deviate from a lane, LDA alerts the driver with an audio-visual alert and steering wheel vibration. Some models are also equipped with Lane Keep Assist, which controls power steering to help make it easier for the driver to remain within lane markings.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)

On highways, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control uses millimeter-wave radar to detect preceding vehicles and determine their speed. It then adjusts vehicle speed (within a set range) to help maintain a pre-set distance between vehicles. By using a forward-facing camera and millimeter-wave radar to monitor vehicles moving into or out of the lane, DRCC helps maintain smooth acceleration and deceleration while driving.

"With the new LSS+ system, we offer drivers an added level of occupant safety in a conveniently bundled package that leverages some of the latest accident prevention technology,”  said Jeff Bracken, Lexus Division group vice president and general manager.  “We certainly expect the proliferation of these features to continue throughout the luxury vehicle market and our Lexus lineup as the industry remains steadfast in the pursuit of enhanced vehicle safety."
