Batter Up: Toyota Spotlights Youth Programs at Annual Congressional Baseball Game

Toyota Awards New Corolla to Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Youth of the Year

Toyota Financial Services and Girl Scouts of the USA Highlight Importance of Financial Education

The House and Senate sent their best aces and sluggers to the baseball diamond Thursday – swinging their bats, flashing some leather and tearing around the bases at the annual Congressional Baseball Game.

When the dust finally settled, the Republicans took the game from the Democrats with a score of 8-7. But it was Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA who were the real winners, thanks in part to Toyota.

“Toyota is thrilled to support this year’s Congressional Baseball Game with our friends from Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA, two organizations with which we share a common commitment to helping our nation’s youth become tomorrow’s leaders,” said Al Smith, Group Vice President, Service Operations & Corporate Planning, Toyota Financial Services. “To enjoy the excitement of the game while celebrating the successes of such promising young people – it’s truly special.”

Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Youth of the Year and Toyota
Toyota awarded a new Corolla and $5,000 to cover expenses associated with car ownership to Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s 2015-16 National Youth of the Year, Whitney Stewart as part of Toyota’s multi-year partnership in support of the youth leadership program.

Stewart, who is from Sarasota, Fla., was selected for her service and leadership in her community, academic excellence and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle. While in high school, she attained the rank of Junior R.O.T.C. Regimental Commander, her school’s top leadership position, and started SEED to SOIL, an educational club which focuses on healthy lifestyles and sustainable agriculture. Stewart recently completed her freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania, where she is majoring in political science with a minor in economics, and has plans to become an attorney in the Air Force, followed by a career in politics and academia.

“As the National Youth of the Year, I am proud to represent the nearly four million kids and teens who are part of Boys & Girls Clubs across the country,” said Stewart. “Thanks to Toyota’s support of the Youth of the Year program, I’ve received scholarships that have made my college dream a reality. Now, I am especially excited to drive my new Toyota Corolla!”

“With the generous support of partners like Toyota, we’re able to provide Boys & Girls Clubs youth with opportunities they may not otherwise have,” said Julie Teer, Chief Development & Public Affairs Officer of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “The Youth of the Year program positively impacts thousands of incredible kids and teens, like Whitney, to help build leadership skills and put them on the path to a great future.”

Toyota is the Signature Sponsor of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Youth of the Year program, and this is the sixth year that the company has donated a new Corolla to the national winner. Learn more at www.YouthoftheYear.org.

America's Best-Selling Car Still Most 'American-Made'

Here at Burien Toyota, we're getting ready to celebrate America's birth and everything that makes it great, so in honor of that here's a nod to how American the Toyota Camry is.

Toyota Camry takes top spot in Cars.com American-Made Index

The best-selling car in America for 14 consecutive years is on another streak that recognizes its American symbolism: another award from Cars.com for most American-made. For the second year in a row and sixth time overall, the Toyota Camry claims the top position on Cars.com’s American-Made Index.

The Cars.com American-Made Index rates vehicles built and bought in the U.S. Factors include the percentage of parts considered domestic under federal regulations, whether the car is assembled in the U.S. and U.S. sales. Models with a domestic parts content rating below 75 percent are disqualified along with models built exclusively outside the U.S. or models soon to be discontinued without a U.S.-built successor. According to NHTSA, the U.S.-sold domestic content for Camry is 75 percent.

The Camry is assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK) in Georgetown, Ky., and more than 270 supplier locations in the United States provide content for the current generation. TMMK is Toyota’s largest vehicle manufacturing plant in the world with annual capacity to produce 550,000 vehicles and 600,000 engines.

“This recognition from Cars.com is a tribute to Toyota employees, not only those at the plant who build the Camry, but the broader Toyota team who design, engineer, market and finance the vehicle in the United States,” said Bob Carter, Toyota senior vice president of automotive operations. “We also support local suppliers and economies, and we have invested more than $6 billion into our Kentucky operations alone, which is growing with our new production engineering campus under construction there.”

Toyota’s Georgetown footprint covers more than 1,300 acres just north of Lexington, Ky., and the facility is 8.1 million sq. ft., a space equal to 169 football fields under one roof. In addition to Camry and Camry Hybrid, TMMK assembles the Avalon, Avalon Hybrid and Lexus ES 350, which began production last fall, the first time a Lexus vehicle has been produced in the U.S. The plant also produces axles, steering components, machined blocks, cylinder heads, crankshafts, camshafts and rods and axle assemblies. Since vehicle production began in 1988, more than 10 million vehicles have rolled off the Georgetown assembly line where full-time employment is nearly 8,000.

Toyota has a second vehicle on the Cars.com American-Made Index: the Sienna, assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana in Princeton, ranks third. The Indiana plant celebrated its 20th anniversary in May.

In addition to manufacturing, a significant amount of design and engineering of both Camry and Sienna took place in the United States at Calty Design Research, Inc. and Toyota Technical Center (TTC), respectively. Calty is headquartered in Newport Beach, Calif., with a production design studio in Ann Arbor, Mich., and TTC is based in York Township, Mich. Both Camry and Sienna have American chief engineers.

Toyota has five assembly plants in the United States, which produced 1.34 million vehicles in 2015, and another five manufacturing facilities that produce vehicle engines, parts and components. Toyota annually purchases $35.3 billion of parts/components and goods and services in the United States.

Toyota has nearly 35,000 direct employees in the U.S., which includes nearly 25,000 in manufacturing.

Toyota Adds Child Models to Virtual Crash Dummy Line-up

Toyota Motor Corporation has added three new models to represent children aged ten, six, and three to Version 4 of its Total Human Model for Safety (THUMS) virtual crash dummy software. THUMS allows injuries sustained by human bodies during vehicle crashes to be simulated on computer, and sales of the new models will begin from this autumn.

THUMS is able to forecast the extent of injuries sustained throughout the human body, and thus, is utilized in the technological development of passenger protection devices such as airbags, and to contribute to improved vehicle safety performance. THUMS is also increasingly being used in the field of motorsports. For example, it has been used by NASCAR (the U.S.-based National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) to formulate regulations for seat shapes that are better able to reduce the likelihood of rib fractures sustained in drivers as a result of racing accidents.

The ten-year old (138cm tall), six-year old (118cm tall) and three-year old (94cm tall) additions to THUMS Version 4 represent the average physiques of children at each respective age. As with the large male (189cm tall), average-build adult male (179cm tall), and small female (153cm tall) models that are already being sold, the new models will come in two versions -- a passenger version and a pedestrian version -- for a total of six new additions to the THUMS line-up. This expanded line-up takes into consideration the influence of age and physique, and allows for a more thorough injury analysis.

Ever since THUMS Version 1 was launched in the year 2000, continued improvements and refinements have been made to the software. For Version 2, which was released in 2003, faces and bone structure were added to the models. Version 3, launched in 2008, added a brain simulation and in 2010, Version 4 was upgraded with detailed modeling of the brain and also the addition of internal organs and their placement and interaction within the body. In 2015, Version 5 added simulated musculature, allowing the models to assume the same bracing positions that a human might just before a crash.

The newly launched child-spec models were created as a result of collaborative research between Wayne State University, the University of Michigan, and the Collaborative Safety Research Center* located in the Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

THUMS is available for purchase through the Tokyo-based JSOL Corporation and ESI Japan. THUMS is used for a wide variety of purposes by automobile manufacturers, parts manufacturers, and universities both in Japan and overseas. It contributes to research on safety technologies not just at Toyota, but also by organizations all over the world. The ultimate desire of a mobile society is to advance towards the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and injuries. Going forward, Toyota will utilize THUMS to analyze the injuries sustained by both passengers and pedestrians during collisions with and between vehicles, and to further research and improve safety technologies of all kinds.

Reference: the evolution of THUMS
1997Toyota begins developing THUMS in cooperation with Toyota Central R&D Labs, Inc.
2000Version 1 goes on sale
2003Version 2 launches, adding detailed modeling of faces and bones
2008Version 3 launches, adding detailed modeling of the brain
2010Version 4 launches, adding detailed modeling of internal organs
2015Version 5 launches, adding detailed modeling of muscles

*The Collaborative Safety Research Center was established in 2011. It aims to reduce the number of traffic fatalities and injuries through collaborative research with North American universities, hospitals and research agencies, and by sharing the results of this research with society. Between 2011 and 2021, it is slated to receive 85 million dollars in investment.

Parents Magazine and Edmunds.com Rank Toyota Sienna a Top 10 Family Car of the Year

It’s the only minivan on the market with all-wheel drive. That distinction, along with recent technological and safety enhancements, is earning Toyota Sienna accolades from automotive industry leaders. Edmunds.com and Parents Magazine have named Toyota’s long-cherished minivan one of the 10 best family cars of the year, and the winner in the Best Minivan category. The “Best Family Cars of 2016” feature appears in the July 2016 issue of the magazine, as well as on Parents.com.

Rankings were based on factors including quality of ride; safety; comfort and capacity; fuel efficiency; kid-friendly features; price and value; reliability; interior and exterior workmanship; visibility, controls and instrumentation; and attributes such as appearance, ergonomics and special design features that set the cars apart.

“The endlessly roomy Sienna stands above its competitors for two reasons: It’s the only one with available all-wheel drive, and the especially user-friendly controls help you stay focused on the road,” Parents Magazine writes.

With the Sienna, Toyota wants to make parenting easier. The van, for example, is equipped with four LATCH locations for securing child seats. In addition, the Sienna’s Driver Easy Speak option reduces the need to shout commands from the helm. Using the microphone from the Sienna’s voice-command multi-media system, the system conveys a driver’s voice through the audio system’s rear speakers.

For families who appreciate fun during road trips, a Dual-View Entertainment Center—featuring two displays within a 16.4-inch widescreen image—combines Blu-Ray capability, an HDMI input and an SD card reader that can play 10 different audio and video formats from two separate sources. The screen can be easily seen from the third row of the van, and can be operated from any seat via remote control. The option also includes a pair of wireless headphones.

With the third-row seat stowed and the second-row seat removed, the Sienna provides up to 150 cubic feet of available space. Numerous storage bins, spaces and cupholders are located throughout the cabin. Sliding the second-row seats all the way to the rear creates a walk-in aisle, making it easier to enter and exit, install a child seat or place a child in a seat.

Toyota made several technological enhancements to the 2016 Sienna, including upgrades to the Entune multimedia head units that integrate Siri® Eyes Free mode, and a new Connected Navigation Scout® GPS App Link for Entune® Audio Plus, which uses a smartphone to provide navigation functionality through the head unit.

The standard Toyota Star Safety System™ equips the 2016 Toyota Sienna with Anti-lock Brakes, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution, Brake Assist, enhanced Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, and Smart Stop Technology. For certain grades, a Blind Spot Monitor (relying on sub-millimeter wave radar) alerts a driver to a vehicle in a blind spot with side-mirror indicators. In addition, the Rear Cross Traffic Alert function assists with backing out of a driveway or parking space.

2017 Toyota Camry Reveals Secret for Remaining America's Top-Selling Passenger Car for 14 Consecutive Years

  • Entune™ Audio Plus multimedia system with Connected Navigation App & JBL®Audio is standard on XLE and XSE grades.
  • Qi-compatible Wireless Smartphone Charging standard on XLE and XSE grades
  • Available automatic emergency braking.
  • Choice of four-cylinder, V6 or Hybrid powertrains
  • Camry Hybrid system nets 200 horsepower and gets up to 42 MPG city rating

The 2017 Toyota Camry continues to offer the best combination of roominess, comfort, quality, safety and performance in the midsize segment, as defined by the best judges of such factors:customers. And so you could say that the formula for turning a midsize sedan into America’s best-selling passenger car for 14 consecutive years hides in plain sight.

The Camry, now in its 35th year and seventh design generation, adds even more value for 2017, with the XLE and XSE grades now having as standard the Entune™ Audio Plus multimedia system with Connected Navigation App & JBL® Audio. The XLE, XSE four-cylinder and XLE Hybrid now also come standard with Qi Wireless Smartphone Charging for compatible phones. These additional standard features come at no added cost to the consumer, as the MSRP on all Camry models is carried over from the previous model year.  For an extra dash of style, the bold Blue Streak Metallic color, which was on the 2016 Camry Special Edition, is now a regular production color available for the sporty SE and XSE grades.

The 2017 Camry meets the needs of a broad spectrum of midsize sedan customers by offering a broad selection of models. Camry comes in four distinctive grades, including LE, XLE, SE, and XSE. Another key to Camry’s ongoing dominance in the midsize segment is found under the hood, where three powertrain choices include a 178-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine; 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and the Hybrid model, which is expected to offer up to a 40 MPG combined rating.

The 2.5-liter four and 3.5-liter V6 engines come teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel efficiency, long a Camry calling card, comes in at an anticipated 24 MPG city / 33 MPG highway for the four-cylinder and 21 MPG city / 30 MPG highway for the V6.

IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK
The 2016 model year Camry earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating when equipped with the Pre-Collision System that includes automatic emergency braking.  The Pre-Collision System with automatic emergency braking carries over to the 2017 Camry as part of the Technology Package that also equips the Camry with Dynamic Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert and with Auto High Beam.

The 2017 Camry also offers a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, an option offered on XLE and XSE grades. All Camry models come equipped with 10 standard airbags, an array that includes driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System, front and rear seat-mounted side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver’s and front passenger’s knee airbag.

The available Safety Connect™ telematics system on XLE grades (with a one-year complimentary trial subscription) covers four safety and security features: Automatic Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Location, Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), and Roadside Assistance.

Like all 2017 Toyota vehicles, the Camry comes standard with the STAR Safety System, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.

Camry Hybrid: 200 System Net Horsepower, Expected 42 MPG City Rating
Leave it to the world’s hybrid leader to create a midsize sedan that delivers both high performance and high fuel efficiency. The Camry Hybrid packs the company’s two decades of hybrid experience into its Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain. The 2017 Camry Hybrid LE anticipates MPG ratings of 42 city/38 highway/40 combined fuel economy. The Camry Hybrid is also available in XLE and SE grades, so hybrid drivers can enjoy the same luxury and sportiness available in the gasoline model.

Next come some numbers that might take even hybrid aficionados by surprise: The 2017 Toyota Camry Hybrid can accelerate from zero-to-60 mph in 7.6 seconds, placing its performance between the four-cylinder and V6 models.

Most drivers do not measure their cars’ performance in seven-second bursts, however. In the cut and thrust of everyday driving and commuting, the Camry Hybrid impresses with its response, helped in large part by the electric motor, which produces 200 lb.-ft. of torque.

Driving the Camry Hybrid, one is aware only of the seamlessness with which Hybrid Synergy Drive combines output from the 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine and a high-torque electric motor through its unique transaxle. The system varies power between the gas engine and electric motor, or combines both, as needed. Total system output is 200 horsepower.

More Than Batteries and Gasoline
Toyota pioneered other technologies that helped make its hybrids highly fuel efficient. When applying the brakes, for example, regenerative braking converts the electric motor to a generator that captures kinetic energy from the wheels, storing it in the hybrid battery pack.

The driver can play an active role in fuel efficiency using the driver-selectable modes. Selecting ECO mode optimizes throttle response and air conditioning output to help prioritize fuel economy.

Choosing EV mode allows the Camry Hybrid to drive solely on the electric motor for up to 1.6 miles at speeds below approximately 25 mph. A Hybrid System Indicator and fuel consumption indicator, located in the Optitron gauges, helps the driver to operate the car as economically as possible.

Youth Movement
The Toyota Camry appeals to drivers of all ages, but one model in particular has been bringing in customers that are, on average, five years younger than other Camry customers. That would be the SE, which accounts for about 43 percent of Camry sales.

The SE and the even sportier XSE stand apart with a unique front fascia design with a sport, piano-black mesh grille. A dark chrome coating on the halogen or LED headlamps (standard on V6) of these sporty models accentuates the sporty stance. (Other Camry grades’ headlamps have a clear appearance.) The SE and XSE can be paired with either the four-cylinder or V6 powertrain, and the SE treatment is also available for the Camry Hybrid.

It’s the way that the Camry SE and XSE drive, though, that really wins over the young and young at heart. Specially tuned suspension sharpens agility yet preserves ride comfort. The SE features 17-inch alloy wheels with a graphite finish. The XSE gets even more of a performance look with 18-inch machine-finish alloy wheels featuring gloss black accents and carrying P225/45R18 tires.

The SE and XSE can rev up the car enthusiast lurking in any driver. In both models, sport front seats with more supportive side bolsters grip the driver, and the driver grips a leather-trimmed three-spoke steering wheel. A multi-mode console shifter and steering wheel paddle shifters control the six-speed automatic transmission. Exclusive to the SE and XSE, the transmission features faster shift times when in “S” mode, along with downshift blipping control to intensify the performance-driving feel.

The Camry offers available LED low- and high beams with automatic leveling, and front turn signal indicators and LED Daytime Running Lights for an elegant appearance.

Camry Comfort
The 2017 Camry upholds its well-earned reputation for comfort with a cabin outfitted in premium soft-touch materials. Depending on model grade, seat cover textures range from premium fabric up to genuine leather trim and Ultrasuede trim with durable, high contrast French stitching. Detailed stitching and satin chrome trim give the Camry cabin a sophisticated appearance and luxurious feel.
A 4.2-inch TFT screen nestled between the three-dimensional Optitron gauges is standard on all grades. The screen’s color animation displays a wide range of vehicle functions and coordinates with the multimedia system to display audio, navigation, warnings and communications. It’s also networked with the direct Tire Pressure Monitoring System (available on select models), enabling the driver to see the pressure in each tire.

The Camry’s console tray offers more storage and a convenient power source in the storage box. The enclosed bin in front of the shifter offers a 12v power port, USB port and an available Qi-compatible Wireless Smartphone Charging system for select smart phones.

Entune™ Multimedia
Camry drivers can count on entertainment and connectivity with a variety of audio and Navigation packages. Depending on model grade, the Camry uses either a 6.1-inch or 7-inch touch-screen displays. Bluetooth® wireless is standard, naturally, for compatible hands-free phone calls and audio streaming. It’s accessible in all models from the steering wheel, as is the audio system.

The 7-inch touch screen display serves as a portal for Entune, Toyota’s innovative multimedia system with access to the subscription-free App Suite. Entune with App Suite turns a compatible smartphone into a source of information and entertainment with access to popular mobile applications and data services.

The Entune App Suite includes mobile apps for Destination Search, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable®, Pandora®, Facebook Places, Yelp™ and Slacker Radio; real-time info including traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports and stocks. After pressing a steering wheel switch, you simply speak the name of the Entune App you want to use to launch it. Then, you use the audio controls or voice commands to operate it.

The top Entune multimedia system, available on select models, is equipped with a 7-inch Premium Navigation system with JBL® GreenEdge™ audio. Split-screen capability can simultaneously display navigation and audio information. Available HD Radio includes iTunes®tagging and SiriusXM Satellite Radio™ (with a 90-day complimentary trial).

Every Camry sold in North America is the product of over 7,000 skilled American team members. With significant design and engineering contributions in Michigan, and assembly in Kentucky, a unique American touch goes into each Camry.
