Toyota RAV4 EV Adds to Array of Toyota Vehicles

Last fall, Toyota launched the RAV4 EV and one Toyota executive is talking about how it could meet the needs of many consumers.

Toyota's Executive Program Manager, Sheldon Brown, sat down for a about 15 minutes to do an video interview about the Toyota RAV4 EV and, whether you are into "techy" stuff or not, it is a really interesting interview to watch. Brown discusses the history and development of the Toyota RAV4, a process that started in the early 1990s. I, for one, had no idea that research into the electrification of the powertrain started that long ago.

Brown discusses many aspects of the new RAV4 EV and what makes it an incredible machine. He starts with the fact that the RAV4 EV is based on a great concept, the original RAV4. But in addition to obvious engine changes, the RAV4 EV is "more useful" and bigger.

Here are some of the other improvements over previous models:

• Performance is "head and shoulders" above other models.
• Gets an estimated 170 mile range.
• 5-6 hours for a full charge, but that full charge provides more power and "get up and go."
• The previous model could do about 80 mph, the current model can go 100 mpg

One of the most telling statements Brown made was when he described how the RAV4 EV is one more product in the array of Toyota products. He said Toyota wants to provide an array of products to allow consumers to purchase what works for them whether it be fuel cell, hybrid electric, plugin hybrid, or electric like the RAV4 EV.

Undoubtedly, the RAV4 EV will scratch the itch of many consumers who desire an electric vehicle.
