Toyota Sales Rise 22 Percent, Dethrones GM as Top-Selling Automaker

Toyota has recovered completely (and then some) from the earthquake and tsunami in 2011 in Japan, and flooding in Thailand that same year, that pushed it from the top of the automotive-selling world; Toyota sales rose 22 percent in 2012 to dethrone General Motors and become the top-selling automaker.

Toyota’s sales grew an impressive 22 percent compared to GM’s 2.9 percent.Toyota sold more than 9.7 million vehicles, beating out GM’s 9.29 million vehicles.

“There were a few months where Toyota manufacturing was really impacted by these natural disasters,” said Nathan Ayers of Burien Toyota. “Many local dealerships were impacted by what they had on their lots and buyers may not have been able to get exactly what they wanted or had to wait. That’s all over. These new numbers prove that Toyota is back and better than ever.”

According to this article, “Toyota's comeback from the earthquake, and flooding in Thailand, is only part of the story, says Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting for LMC Automotive, a Detroit-area industry forecasting firm. The company also has freshened up its stale midsize sedan, the Camry, the top-selling car in the United States.”

The launch of the new Toyota Corolla should keep Toyota ahead of all the competition this year, too.

GM was the top-selling automaker for 70 years until 2008 when Toyota first dethroned them. GM took over the top spot in 2011, but it only took one year for Toyota to come roaring back, which is a testament to it’s innovative systems, award winning vehicles, and customer loyalty.
