The Toyota Prius v – the “big Prius” – gets a new look for 2015.   But Toyota didn’t mess with the outstanding roominess in the largest model in the Prius Family, a car sized for families with a hefty 42 MPG EPA combined fuel economy rating.

Revised front and rear styling and striking new colors including Attitude Black Metallic, Absolutely Red and tasty Toasted Walnut Pearl give Prius v a sportier attitude. The new front bumper, grille, available integrated fog lights and available Toyota-first LED projector low- and high-beam headlights contribute to the roomy Prius v sporty makeover. Inside, new Entune® Audio systems bring new multimedia capabilities. A Peek Into the Future: Simple, Easy Controls
Get behind the wheel of a Prius v, and you’ll be struck by the cockpit’s clean yet futuristic appearance. You’ll also be pleased by how easy the controls are to see and use. The center-mounted instrument panel puts vital information at eye level. Don’t look for a shift lever or parking brake handle -- push buttons are used to start and operate the car, and the drive-by-wire shift toggle replaces a clunky lever. A single automatic climate control dial looks advanced and works with ease.

The available animal-free SofTex® seat material is designed to resist spills and wear – perfect for a family vehicle. As the name suggests, it’s soft to the touch. SofTex is also lighter than leather and other traditional leatherette-type materials, and its production generates 85 percent fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than conventional synthetic leather production.
 
The new 4.2-inch TFT screen nestled between the gauges, is standard on Prius v Three and higher.  The screen’s animation displays a wide range of vehicle functions including odometer, clock, climate control settings, fuel economy, fuel economy history, current/average fuel economy, cruising range, average speed, hybrid system information, Hybrid System Indicator, energy monitor, audio menu, simple navigation indicator and warning messages.

You’ll find useful storage spaces throughout the Prius v, including dual glove boxes, a center console storage box and utility tray and five cup holders in large and medium sizes. Bottle holders are built into the front and rear door pockets, and most models feature an overhead storage space that can hold sunglasses.

Hybrid Synergy Drive: The Hybrid Gold Standard
Toyota’s clear hybrid leadership shines through in the Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain, which combines the output of a 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle, 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor. A full hybrid, the Prius v can run on the gasoline engine alone, battery alone, or a combination of both.

The system’s combined 134 net system horsepower feels even stronger to the driver due to the unique way the system combines the torque of the gasoline engine and electric motor through a planetary-type continuously variable transmission. Automatic start/stop helps to reduce fuel consumption in urban driving.

The compact and lightweight gasoline engine operates very quietly and qualifies for SULEV and Tier2 Bin3 emissions standards. The nickel-metal hydride battery pack is the same as in the Prius liftback, but with a cooling duct located under the rear seat.

Like the Prius liftback, the Prius v presents the driver with the choice of four driving modes, NORMAL, POWER, ECO and EV. POWER mode enhances mid-range response for better performance on slopes and mountainous terrain. ECO mode adjusts throttle input and climate control to maximize fuel economy. In EV mode, the Prius can drive on battery power alone at low speeds for about a mile under certain conditions. When operating under battery power only, the Prius v is ultra-quiet, so a Vehicle Proximity Notification System helps alert pedestrians and cyclists by emitting a small warning sound.

As in other Toyota hybrids, the Prius v employs numerous special features to squeeze maximum efficiency out of every gallon of regular-grade gas. Regenerative braking helps to recapture electrical energy under deceleration, sending it to the battery, which helps to reduce fuel consumption.

The electric water pump and electric power steering work without accessory drive belts, which helps reduce maintenance costs. Likewise, the climate control system uses an electrically driven compressor, so the air conditioning can run even when the gasoline engine shuts off, as it does under certain conditions in normal driving. The available single LED projector low and high-beam headlights enhance visibility while reducing electric draw and are designed to be virtually maintenance free for the expected life of the vehicle.
 
Banishing the Bounce
Know those irritating expansion strips on some freeways? Toyota engineered a system called Pitch and Bounce Control for the Prius v to even things out. The novel system uses the torque of the hybrid motor to enhance ride comfort and control and help make the ride feel more composed over such surfaces. The Prius v comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels with full wheel covers, and 17-inch alloy wheels are available.
 
Entune® Unlocks a World of Information
The Prius v is equipped with Toyota’s latest multimedia technology. The standard Entune Audio is a touch-screen system with a 6.1-inch screen. The AM/FM CD player unit offers MP3/WMA playback capability with six speakers, a USB 2.0 port for iPod® connectivity and control, rear camera display, Bluetooth hands-free phone capability and audio streaming, and an auxiliary input jack. The display also provides vehicle information and allows the driver to customize vehicle settings.

A Safety Star
There’s safety in strength in the Prius v. Expansive use of high-strength steel, notably in the front frame members, is key to the strong body structure that’s also commendably light. Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against corrosion with no mileage limitation. The hybrid-related components, including the HV battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are covered for eight years/100,000 miles. In applicable states hybrid-related component coverage is 15 years/150,000 miles with the exception of the hybrid battery, which is covered for 10 years/150,000 miles.

Toyota’s most affordable hybrid vehicle is also its most fuel efficient.  The Prius c with EPA-estimated 53 MPG city / 46 MPG highway / 50 MPG combined, offers the highest MPG of any vehicle on the road today (MPGe vehicles not included).

The “c” Stands for City. But It Makes Sense Out in the Country, Too. 
Toyota designed the Prius c as an urban-friendly runabout, and yes, the “c” stands for city. However, you certainly don’t need to live in a city to reap the benefits of ownership. That 46-MPG highway fuel economy rating is a boon in America’s wide-open spaces, where gas stations are few and far between.

The Prius c is sized like a subcompact outside but has the room of a bona fide compact inside. (It is classified as a compact by the EPA.)  Efficient packaging of the hybrid powertrain, battery pack and fuel tank results in 104.5 cu. ft. of total interior volume (87.4 cu. ft. passenger volume, 17.1 cu. ft. cargo volume). Youthful Exterior and Interior Design
The Prius c design projects a fun, youthful attitude that appeals to all ages. It’s also slippery, cheating the wind with a low 0.28 coefficient of drag (Cd). Its lower-body area is wider below the beltline, and combined with very short overhangs and sculpted rear flares, it gives the car an athletic stance.

What Makes It Go (on So Little Gas)
The Prius c uses its own version of Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive, the technology found in all the brand’s hybrids. The gas engine, electric motor and battery pack are all smaller and lighter than in the standard Prius.

The SULEV (Tier 2 Bin 3)-certified 1.5-liter in-line, 4-cylinder gasoline engine runs on the Atkinson cycle to increase efficiency. It produces 73 horsepower and 82 lb.-ft. of torque, contributing to a total hybrid system output of 99 hp. Locating the Prius c’s 144-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack under the rear passenger seat, near the center of the vehicle and low in the chassis, helps achieve a low center of gravity for excellent agility.

Like all Toyota hybrids, the Prius c is a full hybrid, meaning it can run on the gasoline engine alone, battery alone, or a combination of both. Hybrid Synergy Drive combines the output of the gas engine and electric motor through an innovative planetary-type continuously variable transmission.

As on other Toyota hybrids, the Prius c employs a slew of other technologies to curb its fuel usage. A stiff body structure, made so by extensive use of lightweight, high-strength steel, helps make the Prius c safe, and also allows suspension tuning that yields an admirable combination of handling responses and ride comfort. Front suspension is a MacPherson strut design, and the rear tuned torsion beam configuration employs coil springs.

For the second time in a generation, Toyota has re-imagined the future of mobility.

The Toyota Mirai is a four-door, mid-size sedan with performance that fully competes with traditional internal combustion engines – but it uses no gasoline and emits nothing but water vapor. The groundbreaking fuel cell electric vehicle is powered by hydrogen, re-fuels in about five minutes, and travels up to 300 miles on a full tank.

Mirai will be available to customers in California beginning in fall 2015, with additional markets tracking the expansion of a convenient hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Powered by an industry-leading fuel cell electric drivetrain and supported by an exceptional 360-degree ownership experience, Mirai marks a turning point for consumer expectations for a zero-emission vehicle.

Making its Mark with Performance
In its basic operation, a fuel cell vehicle works much like a battery electric vehicle. But instead of the large drive battery, Mirai’s fuel cell stack combines hydrogen gas from tanks with oxygen to produce electricity that powers the electric motor. 

Toyota’s proprietary fuel cell stack represents a major leap forward in performance, delivering one of the world’s best power outputs of 3.1 kW/L at a dramatically reduced size that fits under the front driver and passenger seats. The system provides Mirai with a maximum output of 153hp, accelerating from 0-60 in 9.0 seconds and delivering a passing time of 3 seconds from 25-40 mph.

What’s more, thanks to fuel cell technology’s versatility and adaptability, the Mirai offers performance options that go well beyond a traditional automobile. In fact, the vehicle will be offered with an optional power take off (PTO) device that enables Mirai to serve as a mobile generator in case of emergency. With the PTO accessory, Mirai is capable of powering home essentials in an average house for up to a week in an emergency – while emitting only water in the process. 

Safe and Reliable Transportation
Toyota began fuel cell development in Japan in the early 90s and have developed a series of fuel cell vehicles, subjecting them to more than a million miles of road testing. In the last two years alone, fuel cell test vehicles have logged thousands of miles on North American roads. This includes hot testing in Death Valley, cold testing in Yellowknife, Canada, steep grade hill climbs in San Francisco and high altitude trips in Colorado. The Toyota-designed carbon fiber hydrogen tanks have also undergone extreme testing to ensure their strength and durability in a crash. 

This extended legacy of research and development is reflected in Mirai’s safety and reliability.  At Toyota’s advanced Higashifuji Safety Center, the vehicle has been subjected to extensive crash testing to evaluate a design specifically intended to address frontal, side and rear impacts and to provide excellent protection of vehicle occupants.  A high level of collision safety has also been achieved to help protect the fuel cell stack and high-pressure tanks against body deformation.

Mirai will also feature a broad range of standard onboard safety technologies, including vehicle pre-collision, blind spot monitor, lane departure alert, drive start control and automatic high beams.

Focused on the Consumer
Toyota believes that outstanding vehicle performance must be matched by an exceptional ownership experience.  And Toyota is committed to delivering on that promise.

When it hits the market in 2015, customers can take advantage of Mirai’s $499 per month/36 month lease option, with $3649 due at lease signing, or purchase the vehicle for $57,500.  With combined state and federal incentives of $13,000 available to many customers, the purchase price could potentially fall to under $45,000. 

The vehicle will be matched by a comprehensive, 360-degree Ownership Experience offering a range of services, including:

• 24/7 concierge service, with calls answered by a dedicated fuel cell representative;   
• 24/7 enhanced roadside assistance, including towing, battery, flat tire assistance, trip interruption reimbursement, and loaner vehicle;
• Three years of Toyota Care maintenance, which covers all recommended factory maintenance, up to 12,000 miles annually;
• Eight-year/100,000-mile warranty on fuel cell components;
• Entune and three years of complimentary Safety Connect, including hydrogen station map app; and,
• Complimentary hydrogen fuel for up to three years.

Building a Convenient Refueling Infrastructure 
In addition, Toyota continues to support the development of a convenient and reliable hydrogen refueling infrastructure.

Research at the University of California Irvine’s Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP) has found that 68 stations, located at the proper sites, could handle a FCV population of at least 10,000 vehicles.  Those stations are on their way to becoming a reality. By the end of 2015, 3 of California’s 9 active hydrogen stations and 17 newly-constructed stations are scheduled to be opened to the general public, with 28 additional stations set to come online by the end of 2016, bringing the near-term total to 48 stations.

Nineteen of those 48 stations will be built by FirstElement Fuels, supported by a $7.3 million loan from Toyota.  The company has also announced additional efforts to develop infrastructure in the country’s Northeast region.  In 2016, Air Liquide, in collaboration with Toyota, is targeting construction of 12 stations in five states – New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

Scion tC Release Series 9.0 Steals the Show

Two-Tone, 'Show Car' Styling Features Scion’s First Blacked-Out Badge

Vibrant magma orange and designer details transform the new Scion tC Release Series 9.0 into a driver’s show car. Scion joined forces with Jeremy Lookofsky of Cartel Customs to create the limited edition, two-tone version of the sports coupe.

Scion will produce just 2,000 of the tC Release Series 9.0 vehicles which will feature a unique black and magma exterior, an aero kit designed by Cartel Customs, a center exhaust, a Smart Key with Push Button Start featuring the “Cartel Logo” and orange front seat belts.

Orange stitching carries the theme through to the steering wheel and seats, while orange paint adds an exotic look to dashboard components, door panels and shifter surround. The blacked out Scion badge brings a final aggressive detail to the front face.

“The Scion tC Release Series 9.0 stands out from the crowd with a bold exterior look and high-end details,” said Scion Vice President Doug Murtha. “This limited series tC will excite drivers looking for a show car they can drive every day.”  

Other features of tC Release Series 9.0 include:
 

• Black finish alloy wheels with matching center cap
• Gloss black finish side mirrors and door handles
• Release Series badge mirror cover
• Toyota Racing Development lowering springs
• High-profile rear spoiler
• Cartel logo floor and cargo mats

The series vehicles will come with either six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management® technology. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) will be $23,190 for the manual transmission and $24,340 for the automatic transmission, excluding the delivery, processing and handling (DPH) fee of $770.

Who Says It's Not Easy Being Green?

Not only is Toyota Alabama a global leader in building world-class engines, but it has also become a leader in environmental excellence. The Huntsville plant received recognition for five environmental awards this week, further demonstrating the facility’s commitment to minimize its environmental footprint.   
 
 

• EPA ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry – reduction of energy use by 14 percent (per unit produced) in one year.

• Three Toyota North America Environmental Awards – outstanding performance in energy and water management plus overall environmental improvement unit plant. The reduction in water use is equivalent to 75 million water bottles. The plant has received this award for eight consecutive years.    

• City of Huntsville Air Pollution Control Achievement Award – reduction of electric usage by 4.3 gigawatt hours per year (enough to power 400 average households for a year). 

 
The EPA has also recognized Toyota and its 14 vehicle assembly, engine and parts plants across North America – including Toyota Alabama – with its ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award for its continued leadership in protecting the environment through superior energy efficiency.
 
It’s Toyota’s 10th consecutive ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award and it is the most among any automaker that assembles vehicles in the United States.
 
Over an 11-year period at Toyota’s 14 plants, total cost savings from energy improvements has totaled more than $500 million, and energy use has been reduced by 22 percent per vehicle produced.  That’s enough energy to power 400,000 average households for a year.
 
As one of two model Sustainable Plants in North America, the Alabama plant is implementing two unique projects: rainwater harvesting to use in the manufacturing process and using end-of-life hybrid vehicle batteries to power operations and provide back-up power during emergencies.
 
Another key component of the company’s environmental initiatives is future sustainability. Projects like afforestation and the fact that Toyota Alabama is a zero waste-to-landfill facility are examples of these sustainable actions.

Think Young People Are Apathetic? Think Again. Nearly 99,000 Take Action With DoSomething.org and Toyota’s The Hunt

This summer, nearly 99,000 young people across the country took action on seven different causes through DoSomething.org and Toyota’s The Hunt.
 
From August 4 to August 10, DoSomething.org members received a challenge each day across seven causes including the environment, education, and physical and mental health. For the first time ever, the campaigns were created by DoSomething.org members aged 13-25.  
 
Those that participated every day were entered to win one of two $10,000 scholarships and a chauffeured concert experience, courtesy of Toyota. 
 
The first winner is Christopher Norvilus, 20 years old from Clermont, FL. Christopher is a first generation college student and a football player at Wisconsin Lutheran College. Due to his family’s financial situation, Chris was not expecting to return to school for the fall semester until he was surprised with a $10,000 scholarship from DoSomething.org and Toyota. Chris returned to school on a flight that same night and the scholarship was unveiled in a surprise event, captured on film by Prank It FWD at this link.

The second winner is Lauren Fitzgibbon, 20 years old from Los Angeles, CA. Lauren is a student at UCLA and is interesting in going into video production. DoSomething.org and Toyota surprised Lauren with a $10,000 scholarship and video camera to help capture the ways she’s making the world suck less.
 
The Hunt engaged young people to take on social change in their local communities and online, and resulted in:
 

• 8,942 de-stress tips for back-to-school shared with #SuperStressFace
• 114,974 pieces of trash picked up with Trash Scavenger Hunt
• 2,569 activity books created for children in hospitals with Patient Playbooks
• 10,071 young people highlighted ability over disability on social media with We Are Able
• 68,107 Band-Aids donated to homeless shelters with Band-Aid Brigade
• 13,544 pet safety flyers distributed with Hot Dogs
• 5,129 cards made for deployed soldiers with Smiles for Soldiers

 
Actor Nathan Kress of iCarly and this summer's Into the Storm was the face of the campaign's PSA video. In addition, Nathan encouraged his fans to get involved each day on Twitter, and participated himself in #SuperStressFace, Trash Scavenger Hunt, and Smiles for Soldiers.
