Toyota Employees Share Why They’re Dedicated to Help Further Amplify the Disability Community’s Voices and Visibility

Disability Pride Month may only be one month out of the year but Toyota’s business partnering group (BPG), ToyotAbility, advocates for disability awareness year-round.

ToyotAbility is an employee resource group at the company that embraces employees and families with physical, invisible, temporary, and permanent disabilities including those with neurodiversity.

The employee group takes pride in being a space to help promote awareness and education about the disability community, help create shared experiences that foster empathy, and help amplify the voices and visibility of those impacted by disabilities.

ToyotAbility’s chapter based at Toyota Motor North America in Plano, Texas held its first-ever Disability Pride Month back in July which was met with positive reception and engagement. Proceeds from a silent auction went directly to My Possibilities, a North Texas-based continuing education and job placement program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

The group also participated in the nonprofit’s signature volunteer event to help students in the classroom. Additionally, ToyotAbility partnered with Parents at Toyota and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) for a virtual session to help prepare and support those in caregiving roles.

Initiatives and events like these are what makes ToyotAbility special for its members. It aims to be a resource that supports Toyota’s commitment to advancing inclusivity and mobility for all.

See why some of these ToyotAbility members are proud to support this organization.

Driving Connections

Shortly after joining Toyota in late 2019, Gus Perez, a senior instructional designer for Toyota Financial Services (TFS), knew that he wanted to be a part of something that would make him feel closer to his colleagues. Like many, Perez was faced with isolation and disconnection during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The work-from-home situation made me think about how I wanted to continue to build my connections with the people at Toyota,” he says. “So, I joined ToyotAbility because the mission and goal of the business partnering group were close to my heart.”

For Perez, who is personally affected by spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic neuromuscular disease that weakens his strength and mobility, the BPG has given him a sense of community and provided him with leadership responsibilities.

“It wasn’t too long after I joined ToyotAbility as a member that there was an opportunity to become involved with supporting education and development as a board member,” he says. “I work as a senior instructional designer, so this opportunity was the perfect fit to lend my expertise to the group. They welcomed me with open arms, and I’ve been active on the ToyotAbility board ever since.”

Perez has become a go-to spokesperson for ToyotAbility, where he’s developed training programs for Disability Employment Awareness Month, as well as moderated and led conversations with groups both inside and outside the company.

“The recognition of how effective I’ve been as a ToyotAbility ambassador has given me a great sense of pride, because I feel I’ve helped move the BPG and Toyota forward by communicating our shared mission and values,” he says.

Speaking Up and Sparking Change

Effective communication and being your own advocate are key to bringing about change. Gabriel Marciano, a product engineer with Quality Compliance, Product Quality & Services Support at Toyota, knows this firsthand.

“I sought out ToyotAbility while struggling with my own mobility challenges at Toyota West Virginia,” he says. “Mitochondrial disease has affected my ability to walk and stand for extended periods, so while working at Toyota West Virginia, I requested an accommodation: the ability to use a golf cart to move from building to building. But as my symptoms progressed, I soon needed to use a scooter, and I was eventually allowed to use a power chair on the plant floors.”

Using his voice no
t only made his life easier at work, but it also empowered him to help other employees in similar situations.

“The work that I’m doing to promote awareness for folks with physical disabilities and invisible diseases,” he says, is what makes him happy. “My disease is invisible and incredibly rare, but I’m lucky. I’m blessed to be who I am and where I am.”

The chair of ToyotAbility’s Training and Education program plans to continue using his voice to spark new ideas.

“The Toyota Way teaches us to bring problems to the surface,” Marciano says. “The hardest part of needing a personal mobility device is transporting it. I believe providing mobility for all includes providing a mobility solution for folks with physical disabilities/limitations. This is a problem that most able-bodied people might not consider because they haven’t had to face that type of problem themselves.”

Passion for Service

Wendy Teufel, an Engineer with Material Quality Chemical at Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, enjoys discovering fun ways to engage and educate in her role as the chair for ToyotAbility’s Community Engagement.

She is inspired by her daughter, Emma, who has special needs (neurodivergent) with an intellectual developmental disability (IDD). Teufel says she believed the business partnering group would be an excellent fit.

“I’m thankful for a friend who encouraged me to get involved with ToyotAbility,” she says. “I was already an active leader in the disability community outside of Toyota. The mission of ToyotAbility aligns with my passion for advocating and improving the lives of those with disabilities.”

Since joining the ToyotAbility board, Teufel has been busy raising awareness and creating experiences that will educate and drive inclusivity.

For example, last fall, Teufel organized a baseball event with the Miracle League of Frisco. ToyotAbility partnered with the Parents of Toyota BPG and had an amazing turnout of over 20 employees on a Saturday morning. Volunteers served as a “buddy” to kids with special needs. It was heartwarming to see every kid get the opportunity at bat and run the bases.

“I’ve worked hard to identify and organize community events for our membership that promote exposure, inclusion and impact, because that’s where the most learning and growth happens,” she says. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve in ToyotAbility with the most welcoming and supportive team.”

“Outlast Outlive:” Toyota Inspires Adventure in First-Ever Trucks Family Campaign

Toyota encourages a life of discovery where new adventures are always waiting. The first-ever Toyota Truck family campaign, “Outlast Outlive,” highlights that message, featuring five body-on-frame vehicles – Tundra, 4Runner, Tacoma, Sequoia and Land Cruiser. The campaign showcases the Toyota Trucks that are built tough with performance and capability as the basis of every design.

The “Outlast Outlive” campaign celebrates the thrill-chasers and the limitless possibilities that await them. The campaign’s two TV spots feature vignettes of people conquering goals through outdoor sports and exploration, even in the face of unexpected challenges.

Authenticity was key during the production of the “Outlast Outlive” trucks family campaign, which was created by Saatchi & Saatchi and directed by Chris Malloy. Unlike traditional new vehicle campaigns cast with actors, Toyota featured real people who live authentically adventurous lives – such as off-roaders, mountain bikers, and rock climbers – with years of experience and expertise in the outdoor space. The team sourced talent with a wealth of exciting personal content to offer as supporting footage in the spots and focused on cultivating a diverse group to feature, demonstrating Toyota’s wide-ranging community of Toyota truck enthusiasts.

A similar approach was taken when selecting Director Chris Malloy. It was important to find someone who could capture raw and action-packed footage to effortlessly showcase the significance and heart of the campaign. Every production detail from locations to props to accessories were thoughtfully considered to maintain the genuine spirit of Toyota’s truck enthusiasts. The result? A dynamic campaign featuring the endless capabilities Toyota trucks have to offer.

“This is our first-ever trucks family campaign, and a perfect opportunity for the all-new 2024 Land Cruiser and 2024 Tacoma to make their TV debut,” says Joseph Moses, general manager, Vehicle Marketing and Communications – Trucks and SUVs, Toyota Motor North America. “These spots are meant to inspire and excite customers about Toyota’s truck lineup that’s specifically built and engineered to last. And that’s unmistakably Toyota.”

Adventure Awaits

The spot “Outlive the Day,” begins with people running into challenges in their various sporting quests – slipping during an icy climb, damaging a bike tire, and falling off a motor bike while attempting a trick. The spot then transitions into thrilling moments that are worth the climb, worth the effort, with their Toyota trucks helping them accomplish amazing things.

The spot “Nightcrawler” follows people throughout their nighttime adventures – exploring caves, ice climbing, off-roading, kayaking, among other activities while counting on their dependable Toyota Trucks to lead the way in their exploration.

The “Outlast Outlive” campaign launched in September and is slated to run through February 2024. The campaign extends across linear TV with high-profile sports programming on NFL, NBA, and EPL as well as digital extensions on NBC, FOX, ESPN and Amazon.

Decades of Heritage

Since 1958, Toyota trucks have been sold in the U.S., and have supported customers through daily life and work, as well as their most exciting and fun outdoor adventures. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Toyota’s plant in San Antonio, TX – where all Tundra and Sequoia vehicles are assembled.

Toyota’s truck heritage has inspired the vehicles today that are filled with years of engineering and understanding – always continuing to evolve. Toyota’s all-new 2024 Tacoma arrives later this year, built with an authentic off-road feel, featuring an ultra-rugged stance that’s adventure ready. The highly anticipated 2024 Land Cruiser will be available in dealerships next year, with heritage-inspired design along with the durability that customers expect, making this vehicle a longtime icon in Toyota’s lineup.

  • Interior Updates Across XLE, Limited and Platinum Grades

Toyota Crown’s magnificent and innovative look breaks every convention in the book and adds bold style to the Toyota sedan lineup. The Toyota Crown offers two electrified powertrains, including the Hybrid Max system, and standard AWD across all grades. With its massive wheels, sleek and aerodynamic shape, the Toyota Crown is a ride that immediately catches the eye.

Available in three grades: XLE, Limited and Platinum, Toyota Crown will offer a choice of two different hybrid powertrains: Hybrid MAX or the Toyota Hybrid System (THS). Hybrid MAX is Toyota’s performance hybrid that has 340 net combined horsepower and a net 400 lb-ft. of torque. Exclusive to the Platinum grade, it pairs front and rear electric motors with a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and direct shift 6-speed automatic transmission. Hybrid MAX produces powerful torque at low RPM for sporty, exhilarating driving and has an EPA-estimated 30 MPG combined city/highway fuel economy rating.

The XLE and Limited grades are equipped with the Toyota Hybrid system that pairs front and rear electric motors with a 2.5-liter engine. This highly efficient hybrid system has an EPA-estimated 41 MPG combined city/highway rating. The system’s nickel-metal hydride battery output has increased to support responsive acceleration at low speeds and provide a satisfying driving feel.

Built on Toyota’s GA-K platform (TNGA-K), the Toyota Crown has an elevated stance that comes in part from standard 19-inch or available 21-inch wheels – the latter of the two being the largest ever on a Toyota sedan. The large diameter wheels lift the Toyota Crown up, giving the car a strong presence that also helps drivers get a clear view of the road. The height also elevates the vehicle’s hip point, the pivot point between the torso and upper legs, measuring at about 25-inches and enables easy vehicle entry and exit.

Toyota Crown’s vibe throws off the conventions of the typical sedan with a side profile that flows to a broad rear end. The dynamic body style is amplified by rounded and sweeping character lines which give it a head-turning look. On the inside, its spacious cabin has a premium feel that offers unique color combinations and available leather-trimmed seating. There is also a full digital display, piano key controls, vertical wireless charging port and the latest Toyota Audio Multimedia system with available 11-speaker JBL® Premium audio system pack in tech and entertainment.

Available colors include Black, Oxygen White, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Heavy Metal and Supersonic Red. A unique bi-tone paint is available on the Platinum grade, pairing black paint that extends from tip to tail, with a pairing choice of Oxygen White, Heavy Metal, Supersonic Red or bi-tone only Bronze Age.

Three Grades, All Hybrid and All Wheel Drive

With three grades to choose from and two unique hybrid powertrains, Toyota Crown brings a unique combination of style, comfort and performance.

The XLE grade comes equipped with the 2.5-liter Toyota Hybrid System, Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive, three selectable drive modes, 19-inch alloy wheels, heated and powered woven fabric front seats and the latest Toyota Multimedia System with 12.3-inch touchscreen and 6 speakers.

The Limited grade also comes equipped with XLE features and adds multibeam LED headlights, a fixed panoramic roof, leather-trimmed seats that are heated and ventilated up front and heated in the rear, 11-speaker JBL® Premium audio system, rain-sensing windshield wipers and Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking (PA w/AB). There is also an available Advanced Technology package that adds dark metallic 21-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels, a Panoramic View Monitor and Digital Key compatibility on select grades (with Remote Connect subscription). Interior colors include Black, Black and Chestnut, and Macadamia.

Additionally, the Toyota Crown Advanced Technology package available on the Limited grade now includes:

  • Traffic Jam Assist: Provides hands-free control of steering, braking and acceleration on controlled access freeways. At speeds under 25 mph and under certain conditions, Traffic Jam Assist will activate to help ease the stress of stop-and-go traffic. (Requires Drive Connect trial or subscriptions)
  • Lane Change Assist: Toyota Crown’s available Lane Change Assist is designed to help you safely change lanes in traffic by partially engaging the turn signal, detecting any vehicles in your way and providing steering assistance into the next lane.
  • Front Cross Traffic Alert: Front Cross-Traffic Alert is designed to detect vehicles that may be approaching from the side so you can enter traffic at intersections with added safety.

The Platinum grade includes everything on XLE and Limited and raises the bar with the Hybrid MAX powertrain, Full-Time Electronic All-Wheel Drive, Adaptive Variable Suspension, six selectable drive modes, Advanced Park, 21-inch machined 10-spoke alloy wheels with black accents and the available bi-tone paint option. Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Change Assist, and Front Cross Traffic Alert are also now standard on the Platinum grade.

All Crown grades will come with Toyota’s new Audio Multimedia System and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 standard.

Hybrid: Two-Ways

Toyota made “hybrid” synonymous with fuel efficiency more than 20 years ago with the first-generation Prius. Today, Toyota continues to expand its hybrid lineup and overall electrified vehicle offerings with Crown, bringing the number of Toyota electrified vehicles to 16.

The Toyota Crown innovates on the hybrid front with the Hybrid MAX System. This system is designed to deliver smooth and powerful torque-filled acceleration for a 0-60 time of 5.7 seconds, while also keeping an eye on fuel efficiency with an EPA-estimated 30 MPG combined rating.

Hybrid MAX combines a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo engine, tuned to hit peak torque between 2000-3000 RPM, with a front electric motor that helps maximize torque production. A rear wheel eAxle that includes a high-output water-cooled electric motor is coupled with the hybrid system to directly transmit force to all four wheels, ensuring a thrilling throttle response and linear acceleration throughout the power band.

Also available is the fourth-generation Toyota Hybrid System, which combines a high-efficiency 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine with two electric motors in a highly compact system. The gas engine employs Variable Valve Timing-intelligent by Electric motor (VVT-iE) on the intake camshaft, and VVT-i on the exhaust camshaft. The variable range for the valve timings of both the intake and exhaust are set to maximize both fuel consumption and output.

Toyota Crown offers either a direct shift six-speed automatic transmission (Platinum grade only) or an electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (eCVT) on the XLE and Limited grades.

The Platinum grade’s direct-shift six speed automatic transmission provides responsive acceleration thanks to Toyota’s Hydraulic multi plate wet start clutch. A combination of technologies works together to enhance accelerator operation and vehicle response. The six speed automatic transmission also applies the assistance of the motor generator within the Hybrid MAX system, minimizing shift drop across the power band. Drivers can also throw the shifter into fixed gear mode, for paddle-shifted fun.

The eCVT on the XLE and Limited Grade shifts gears electronically, providing smart shift operation with a single action. Paired with the THS front and rear hybrid transaxle, Toyota Crown’s powertrain provides low fuel consumption and low noise. Aspects that manage fuel efficiency include an optimized gear ratio and a deceleration mechanism to reduce gear engagement loss.

THS-equipped vehicles feature selectable NORMAL, ECO and SPORT driving modes that let the driver tailor the Toyota Crown’s performance personality. SPORT mode improves and sharpens throttle response, making hybrid driving more fun. ECO mode changes the throttle and environmental logic to help the driver focus on maximizing mileage from the fuel and battery, while NORMAL mode is ideal for everyday driving. Additionally, an EV (Electric Vehicle) mode allows electric-only driving at low speeds for short distances.

The Hybrid MAX equipped Platinum grade receives a more comprehensive drive mode selection – which not only includes NORMAL, ECO and SPORT but adds three drive modes: SPORT+ mode that provides an emphasis on steering response, flat cornering and a sense of stability, COMFORT mode that provides a more supple drive that emphasizes passenger comfort and a CUSTOM mode that enables drivers to adjust system settings individually, creating a safe profile that suits their driving habits.

All-Wheel Drive at its Smartest

The XLE and Limited grades come standard with Toyota’s Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive and the Platinum grade comes with Full-time Electronic All-Wheel Drive, two highly efficient systems that take maximum advantage of the hybrid powertrain’s benefits.

Instead of using a transfer case and driveshaft to the rear wheels, Electronic On-Demand AWD on the XLE and Limited grades employs a separate rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels when needed. Electronic On-Demand AWD achieves stable performance by driving the rear wheels with a rear motor, to provide traction when needed in slippery conditions. The front and rear wheel driving force distribution is controlled to the front and rear wheels between 100:0 and 20:80, for enhanced fuel efficiency and comfortable driving performance.

On the Platinum grade, Full-Time Electronic AWD paired with Hybrid MAX delivers power to the front and rear wheels via a front-mounted hybrid motor and a rear-mounted, eAxle electric motor. This system supports stable AWD performance and satisfying acceleration thanks to being paired with a direct shift six-speed automatic transmission. Full-Time Electronic All-Wheel Drive adjusts between a 70:30 and 20:80 front- and rear-wheel power split, depending on the driving situation. This new AWD system enhances the drive force of the rear wheels and provides the feel of rear-wheel-drive maneuverability, straight line stability and responsive acceleration.

Handling and Stability

While Crown’s overall height stands out, coming in at 60.6-in. compared to 56.9-in. for Camry, Toyota engineers also wanted its ride to provide confident handling and supreme comfort.

A combination of lightweight, high-strength materials, like a ring frame structure, a combination of plate spot and laser welds on the body, and the use of structural adhesive support rigidity. The steering gearbox is mounted directly to the suspension member for a direct steering feel that minimizes line correction. And aero-stabilizing underbody panels with a “stepped” texture help control airflow under the car, supporting downforce for a firmly planted ride.

To help keep the driver and passenger sight lines stable, Toyota Crown’s suspension consists of a MacPherson strut in the front and a multilink rear suspension in the rear. Swing valve shock absorbers are equipped on the Limited and XLE grade and an Adaptive Variable Suspension comes standard on the Platinum grade. Each option is intended to give Crown a smooth ride that minimizes head movement.

The Platinum grade’s Adaptive Variable Suspension components have been tuned to support the high output of the 2.4-liter Turbo Hybrid Engine and eAxle. Crown’s AVS uses variable oil pressure shock absorbers. This system automatically controls the friction within the absorber when turning, controlling the damping force, reducing pitch at high drive torque and minimizing the effects of bumpy roads. A linear solenoid type actuator is also equipped on the system to minimize body pitch and roll. AVS tuning also changes based on the selected drive mode of NORMAL, ECO, SPORT, SPORT+, COMFORT or CUSTOM, adjusting the damping force and balancing steering response, stability control and ride comfort.

Reducing vibrations felt by the driver and passengers was also an important element of Toyota Crown’s ride comfort. Suspension tuning was optimized to minimize vibration by using a soft suspension bushing and a dynamic damper on the front suspension. Polyurethane-coated coil springs in the front help provide a smooth ride and high-damping structural adhesive on the body and reinforced seat mounting points reduces shake generated by the road.

Toyota Crown’s handling is bolstered by an electronically controlled brake system featuring Active Cornering Assist (ACA), which engages the stability control to reduce understeer in certain cornering situations, so the driver feels the enhanced agility, not the system’s operation.

First Class Cabin

The Toyota Crown’s interior received updates to soft-touch materials and additional warm steel-colored accents across XLE, Limited and Platinum grades. The vehicle provides exemplary comfort with standard 8-way power adjustable driver and front passenger seats. Front seat adjustments include slide, recline, tilt, height adjust and lumbar support (driver seat only). Rear seats include ample cushioning and bolster support for maximum enjoyment.

The Toyota Crown comes with standard heated front seats that can be adjusted to three levels. Limited and Platinum add standard ventilated front seats and heated rear seats to the list of comforts. The seats offer comfort and style, with Softex®-trimmed and black woven fabric seating on the XLE, and leather-trimmed seats standard on the Limited and Platinum grades.

Dual-zone climate control, standard for all grades, is accessed via a thin illuminated control panel that runs along the dashboard, just below the multimedia screen, along with other frequently used functions. All Toyota Crown grades also have a 12.3-inch color MID. Drivers can select different displays with the push of a button, including a Hybrid System Indicator showing the driver system output and regeneration status to encourage eco-driving habits. As used on other Toyota hybrid models, the display suggests optimal amounts of acceleration for eco driving.

Toyota Crown Platinum and Limited grades include a standard fixed panoramic moonroof. For added function and ambience, in-cabin LED lighting adds a premium feel. Illumination includes overhead and front/rear footwell lighting, cup holders, USB ports and door handle accents.

Toyota Crown has drivers and passengers plugged in when it comes to charging devices. On the driver’s side, a vertical-type wireless Qi charger with enhanced space efficiency comes standard. There is also a standard USB-Type A and 12V charging port inside the console. A separate dual USB-Type C terminal is also standard on the passenger side, with the insertion port intentionally pointing to the passenger seat. For rear seat passengers, two USB-Type C ports are standard.

To aid outward visibility, the Platinum grade comes standard with Panoramic View Monitor, which provides a 360-degree overhead view of the vehicle’s surroundings. The Panoramic View Monitor is available as part of the Advanced Tech Package on the Limited grade. The standard backup camera features projected path and dynamic gridlines. For additional convenience, Limited and Platinum come standard with a Smart Key System that works on all four doors.

A Sanctuary on the Road

For customers who seek premium experiences in a vehicle, keeping unwanted noise out is paramount. The 2024 Toyota Crown’s cabin brings that priority quietly home. Rather than simply aiming at a “numbers” goal for sound level (decibels), Toyota engineers created a calm atmosphere conducive to enjoying easy conversation or hearing music in cleaner detail.

The high-strength TNGA-K platform is the first defense against noise intrusion, curbing vibration through the steering, floor and structure. Suspension tuning resists road surface disturbances and tire noise is reduced via strategically placed insulation and thoughtful tire/wheel construction. Engineers also undertook extensive analysis of noise transmission paths and filled spaces around door frames, window openings and wiring harnesses for enhanced cabin quietness. Even the inner rocker and bulkhead are connected with adhesive to minimize noise.

The Toyota Crown also uses acoustic glass as a sound-blocking barrier in the cabin. And insulation and body sealing material are placed throughout the structure, between the engine bay and cabin, under the carpeting, and above the headliner. The materials and their placement were optimized to minimize noise in the frequencies that typically interfere with conversation.

Second Nature Technology

All Toyota Crown models feature the Toyota Audio Multimedia system. With an available 12.3-inch touchscreen, the system offers a wide range of connectivity and convenience features, including Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. Users can interact with the system through touch and voice activation. With Intelligent Assistant available through an active Drive Connect* trial or subscription, simple phrases like “Hey Toyota” awakens the system for voice-activated commands to search for directions, find Points of Interest (POI), adjust audio controls, change the cabin temperatures and more. One-year trial included.

In addition, the cloud-based native navigation system also offered through Drive Connect allows for real-time Over-the-Air updates for mapping and Points of Interest (POI), and Google POI data is integrated to ensure up-to-date search capability.

The XLE grade features a 6-speaker sound system that provides clean, powerful sound for all types of music. On Limited and Platinum, standard is an audiophile-worthy JBL® Premium Audio System with 11 speakers, including a rear subwoofer, powered by an 8-channel amplifier. It was acoustically tuned for Toyota Crown to match unique vehicle characteristics.

Toyota Audio Multimedia allows for simultaneous dual Bluetooth® phone connectivity with support for wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ capability. An active Wi-Fi Connect* trial or subscription offers 4G connectivity for up to five devices. Adding to the already robust offering of audio playback ability with HD Radio, USB data and a SiriusXM® Platinum Plan 3-month trial subscription, Wi-Fi Connect also enables the Integrated Streaming feature, providing the ability to link your separate Apple Music® and Amazon Music subscriptions to the vehicle for onboard control. 30 day/3 GB trial included.

The Toyota Crown also offers a host of additional Connected Services. A Safety Connect* trial of up to 10 years includes an Emergency Assistance Button (SOS), 24/7 Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Automatic Collision Notification and Stolen Vehicle Locator. A Service Connect* trial of up to 10 years provides drivers with the capability of receiving Vehicle Health Reports, Maintenance Alerts and reminders.
