Toyota 86 Pays Tribute to International Racing with Limited Hakone Edition

Two hours southwest of Tokyo lies one of the great driving roads in the world, the Hakone Turnpike. This famous stretch of road is on the top of many bucket lists, and Toyota is paying tribute to this iconic spot, as well as other international sports car driving, with the 86 Hakone Edition.
 
The 86 Hakone Edition will feature Hakone green paint on the exterior that is complemented with 17” twisted spoke bronze wheels and a black spoiler.
 
The interior features several unique elements including tan and black Alcantara seats and a black sliding armrest with tan trim and black stitching. A tan Toyota 86 logo is embroidered on the passenger-side dashboard, while the steering wheel, parking brake cover and shift boot all get tan stitching. The door trim, knee pad and meter visor will get black stitching. It will also feature a unique premium trunk carpet with an embossed 86 logo.
 
Everyone that purchases an 86 Hakone Edition will receive a pair of tan key gloves and folio cover with a debossed 86 logo and black stitching.
 
The 86 Hakone Edition is based off the 86 GT grade and will be available for model year 2020. It will have a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmission and be powered by a 2.0-liter horizontally opposed aluminum boxer four-cylinder engine, fed by Toyota’s D-4S Dual Injection System, delivering 205 hp and 156 lb.-ft. (200 hp and 151 lb.-ft. of torque with the six-speed automatic).
 
The 86 Hakone Edition offers all the essential standard exterior amenities: LED projector-beam headlights; color-keyed power mirrors; chrome-tipped dual exhaust; front fender-mounted vortex generators; LED fog lamps; and an aerodynamic floor undercover, a steering wheel with integrated audio and Multi-Information Display controls. Other amenities include dual-zone automatic climate control; heated seats; anti-theft system; and cruise control. Other standard equipment includes Smart Key System on driver and passenger doors with Push Button Start, remote keyless entry system with lock, two-stage unlock, panic and trunk release.

2018 Camry and Sienna Get Spring Makeover Thanks to CarPlay and Amazon Alexa Retrofit

Toyota is committed to advancing the overall technology capabilities of its vehicles.  When it comes to multimedia, we continuously seek to improve the experience and provide consumers access to the technology services they desire, always with an eye toward safety. Early last year, starting with the 2019 Toyota Avalon, we announced Apple CarPlay® and Amazon Alexa® would be accessible on many of our 2019 and most of our 2020 models.

To expand these features to current owners, Toyota is excited to announce that both Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatibility can be added to 2018 Camry and 2018 Sienna vehicles.  
 
“We are always striving to bring highly desirable services to our vehicles. This new program enables CarPlay and Amazon Alexa on some of our most popular vehicles already on the road.” said Steve Basra, vice president of Connected Technologies for Toyota Motor North America. “It’s a great opportunity to surprise and delight our existing customers.”   

Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa installation will be performed at Toyota dealerships. All 2018 Camry and 2018 Sienna owners will receive a notification from Toyota encouraging them to contact their dealer for additional details or to schedule an appointment.  

Separately, although Toyota has previously announced plans to install Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) technology for V2X on vehicles in the U.S starting in 2021, we have decided to pause our deployment at this time. This decision is based on a range of factors, including the need for greater automotive industry commitment as well as federal government support to preserve the 5.9 GHz spectrum band for DSRC. We will continue to re-evaluate the deployment environment as we work toward creating a safer and more efficient driving ecosystem.

Toyota Engineering Facilities Earn LEED Platinum Status in Kentucky and Michigan

 As Toyota’s footprint continues to grow in North America, so does their dedication to the environment and society through Toyota’s Environmental Challenge 2050. Announced in 2017, the ambitious program emboldens the global mobility leader to go beyond zero environmental impact and achieve a net positive impact. Part of that challenge; ensuring new Toyota facilities are constructed and operated sustainably. That commitment has resulted in Toyota’s two newest U.S. facilities being certified LEED Platinum, the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) highest rating.
 
In Georgetown, Kentucky, the $80 million Production Engineering and Manufacturing Center (PEMC) received its LEED Platinum plaque on March 28th. Opened in October 2017, the PEMC serves as the go-between for design, research & development, and manufacturing. "Our team is excited to have earned the U.S. Green Building Council’s highest rating for our Production Engineering and Manufacturing Center," said Chris Reynolds, Toyota’s executive in charge of manufacturing and corporate resources. "Toyota's investment in this facility demonstrates our company’s global challenge of achieving zero CO2 emissions by 2050. Such a significant challenge must start with smaller, achievable goals and designing a building that uses 50% less energy and supplementing with renewables, such as solar panels, are significant steps toward meeting that challenge.”
 
In York Township, Michigan, Toyota’s Supplier Center was presented with their LEED Platinum plaque on April 15th. The Supplier Center, which opened in May of 2017, is part of a recent $154 million investment in Michigan to realign Toyota’s purchasing, prototype, and powertrain operations. Said Shinichi Yasui, executive vice president of Research and Development“Much like vehicle design, smart, thoughtful planning and use of our facilities is integral to the central core of Toyota’s Environmental Challenge 2050. We believe all our work can contribute positively to our planet so we may contribute to a society that lives in harmony with nature.”

The Future of Zero-Emission Trucking Takes Another Leap Forward

Zero-and-Near-Zero-Emission Freight Facilities Project Stakeholders Reveal ‘Shore-to-Store’ Project with Unveiling of Fuel Cell Electric Heavy-Duty Truck

Toyota, Kenworth, the Port of Los Angeles and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) today took the next great leap towards the future of zero-emission trucking, unveiling the first of Toyota and Kenworth’s jointly developed fuel cell electric heavy-duty trucks (FCET). The unveiling was before a crowd of media, government officials and industry and community leaders during a special event held at the Port of Los Angeles.
   
The new generation zero-emission truck expands on the capabilities of Toyota’s first two Project Portal Proof of Concept trucks through enhanced capability, packaging, and performance; offering an estimated range of more than 300 miles per fill, twice that of a typical drayage trucks' average daily duty cycle. Toyota and Kenworth will deploy a total of 10 trucks as part of the Zero-and-Near-Zero Emission Freight Facilities Project (ZANZEFF), hauling cargo received at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, throughout the LA Basin.
 
“Toyota is committed to fuel cell electric technology as a powertrain for the future because it’s a clean, scalable platform that can meet a broad range of mobility needs with zero emissions,” said Bob Carter, Executive Vice President for Automotive Operations Toyota. “The ZANZEFF collaboration and the innovative ‘Shore-to-Store’ project allow us to move Heavy-Duty Truck Fuel Cell Electric technology towards commercialization.”
 
CARB has awarded $41 million dollars to the Port of Los Angeles for the ZANZEFF project as part of California Climate Investments, a California initiative that puts billions of cap-and-trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy and improving public health and the environment, particularly in disadvantaged communities.
 
“This substantial climate investment by the state, matched by the project partners, will help speed up the number of zero-emission trucks in the California communities and neighborhoods where they are needed the most,” said CARB Chair, Mary D. Nichols. “It will provide a real world at-work demonstration of innovative heavy-duty fuel cell electric technologies. The project offers a commercial solution to move cargo and freight around the state using zero-emission trucks and equipment that protect air quality and cut climate-changing emissions.”
 
Since operations began in April 2017, the Project Portal “Alpha” and “Beta” Proof of Concept Class 8 trucks have logged more than 14,000 miles of testing and real-world drayage operations in and around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach while emitting nothing but water vapor. The first Kenworth/Toyota FCET under the ZANZEFF project will begin drayage operations in the fourth quarter, increasing the ports’ zero emission trucking capacity and further reducing the environmental impact of drayage operations.
 
Expanding operations
The latest FCET utilizes the Kenworth T680 Class 8 model combined with Toyota’s fuel cell electric technology and is part of the ZANZEFF project.  Pioneered by the Port of Los Angeles with leading support from Toyota, Kenworth, and Shell, the trailblazing endeavor provides a large-scale “Shore-to-Store” plan and a hydrogen fuel cell  electric technology framework for freight facilities to structure operations for future goods movement. The initiative will help reduce emissions by over 500 tons of greenhouse gas and 0.72 weighted tons of NOx, ROG and PM10.  
 
“The collaboration between the Port of Los Angeles, Kenworth, Toyota and Shell is providing an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the viability of fuel cell electric technology in both drayage service and regional haul commercial vehicle applications operating in Southern California,” said Mike Dozier, general manager of Kenworth Truck Company and PACCAR vice president. “The performance of the 10 Kenworth Class 8 trucks being developed under this program, the first of which debuted today, is targeted to meet or exceed that of a diesel-powered truck, while producing water as the only emissions byproduct.”
 
The Port of Los Angeles, a global maritime leader with respect to zero-emission and near-zero emission technology testing and adoption, will develop the project in several phases, ultimately encompassing initiatives in Southern California, the Central Coast Area, and Merced County. The initial phase is designed to kick-start the leap to a new class of goods movement vehicles, while reducing emissions in designated disadvantaged communities.  
 
“CARB’s $41 million grant was instrumental in launching this project and putting this innovative technology into our rigorous environment,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. “We’re extremely proud of our role as a leading test lab for emerging green technology, helping to pave the way for next-generation, zero-emission technology.”
 
The project phases will include:
 

  • Ten new zero-emissions fuel-cell-electric Kenworth/Toyota FCET developed through a collaboration between Kenworth and Toyota to move cargo from the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports throughout the Los Angeles area, the Inland Empire, the Port of Hueneme, and eventually to Merced.  The trucks will be operated by Toyota Logistics Services (4), United Parcel Services (3), Total Transportation Services Inc. (2), and Southern Counties Express (1). 
 
“It’s an honor for UPS to be collaborating with Toyota, Shell and Kenworth on such a trail-blazing project,” said Carlton Rose, president of global fleet maintenance and engineering for UPS. “As a company always looking for the next innovative technology to better serve our customers, UPS was very pleased to be selected as a demonstrating partner for the hydrogen fuel cell electric semi project. With more than 10,000 alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles in our fleet today, UPS has a long history of pioneering and evaluating technologies that aid us in decreasing our environmental footprint.” 
 

  • Two new large-capacity heavy-duty hydrogen fueling stations will be developed by Shell in Wilmington and Ontario, California. The two new stations will join three additional stations located at Toyota’s Long Beach Logistics Services and Gardena R&D facilities to form an integrated, five station heavy-duty hydrogen fueling network for the Los Angeles basin. Together, these stations will provide multiple sources of hydrogen throughout the region, including over one ton of 100% renewable hydrogen per day at the Toyota Logistics Services station to be operated by Shell, and important research and development advances at a pair of stations operated by Air Liquide, all enabling zero-emissions freight transport.

  • Expanded use of zero-emissions technology in cargo terminal and warehouse environments, including the first two zero-emissions yard tractors to be operated at the Port of Hueneme, as well as the expanded use of zero-emissions forklifts at Toyota’s port warehouse. 
 
A Drop of h2 in the Bucket
Over 16,000 trucks serve the Los Angeles and Long Beach port complexes, North America’s largest trade gateway for containerized cargo. That number is estimated to grow to 32,000 by 2030.  Currently, more than 43,000 drayage trucks are in operation at ports across the United States. 
 
More Than Just Trucks
This announcement is an extension of Toyota’s Environmental Challenge 2050 efforts to eliminate CO2 emissions from its operations. Toyota has previously announced the construction of the Tri-Gen facility which will be the first megawatt-sized carbonate fuel cell power generation plant with hydrogen fueling in the world. The 100% renewable plant will use agricultural waste to generate water, electricity, and hydrogen to support Toyota Logistics Services' (TLS) operations at the Port of Long Beach.
 
In North America, Toyota will minimize environmental impacts, help protect the natural world and share its know-how with others to help create net-positive value for the benefit of the company and society. Toyota Alludes to All-New 2020 Highlander

Partners with Brooklyn Artist to Create Illusion Ahead of NY Auto Show

Is it real? Or is it suspended by invisible strings? The answer to both questions is yes. Toyota has partnered with installation artist and sculptor Michael Murphy to create a 3D illusion for its fourth-generation 2020 Highlander, set to debut at the New York International Auto Show on April 17, 2019, at 9:10 a.m. EDT.
 
The art installation capitalizes on the new sculpted design elements that will make Highlander stand out in the marketplace. This art installation also will appear high in the sky through video that will be projected on buildings around New York leading up to the show. The art installation captures the all-new Highlander’s powerful stance with a modern, sophisticated attitude. In a two-month process, Murphy started with a design rendering of the car to create 3D printouts, then hand painted each piece to match a design rendering of the car. The 200 individual pieces were then strategically placed to appear as if floating in air, creating a three-dimensional Highlander.

Three Toyota team members were honored last night in Washington, D.C. with Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead Awards from The Manufacturing Institute.

The STEP Ahead Awards honor women who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their careers. Award winners represent all levels of the manufacturing industry, from the factory floor to executive leadership. Toyota’s award winners come from multiple operations across North America.

Women totaled 47 percent of the U.S. labor force in 2016, but only 29 percent of the manufacturing workforce – constituting one of manufacturing’s largest pools of untapped talent.

“We are thrilled to see our amazing team members recognized for the excellent work they are doing at Toyota,” said Leah Curry, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia and a 2013 STEP Ahead Award winner. “At this time, when our industry sees a significant lack of women entering manufacturing careers, it is critical that we continue to encourage, empower and elevate today’s female leaders to inspire future generations. That is a mission that we take very seriously at Toyota.”

The STEP Ahead Awards are part of the larger STEP Ahead initiative, launched to examine and promote the role of women in the manufacturing industry through recognition, research and leadership.

 The 2020 Yaris embodies the ideal formula for modern hatchback appeal: make it fun, make it efficient and keep it affordable. Refuses to Blend In
 
A bold, “cab-rearward” design gives the 2020 Yaris Hatchback a distinct hunkered-down, bulldog-like stance. The front end projects a gutsy attitude with a hexagon lower front grille and sharp-eyed headlamps. The XLE grade’s automatic LED headlamps incorporate daytime running lamps. A choice of vibrant exterior colors amps up the head-turning quotient: Stealth, Graphite, Pulse, Sapphire, Chromium, Frost and Icicle.
 
At 161.6 inches long, the Yaris Hatchback can scoot into parking spaces that most others pass up. That’s a real bonus for urban dwellers, and so is the car’s super-tight 32.2-ft. turning circle. Meanwhile, the new Yaris Hatchback is spacious, with a wheelbase nearly 2.4 inches longer than the previous Yaris Liftback model. The 15.9 cu. ft., trunk area is nearly the size found in a midsize sedan. 
 
Raise Your Standards
 
On all 2020 Yaris Hatchback models, standard 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, body-color side mirrors and door handles, and a chrome tailpipe tip set the premium tone. The side mirrors are power-adjustable and have integrated LED turn signals, and they’re also heated for quick cold-weather defrosting.
 
The long list of standard features includes many that are usually optional or offered only on upgrade models: Smart Key Entry with Push Button Start, fog lights, variable intermittent windshield wipers, rear backup camera, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, chrome interior door handles, and driver and front passenger sun visors with illuminated vanity mirrors. There’s even a first aid kit.
 
Max Multimedia
 
The standard 7-inch Touchscreen display audio system is ready to rock or hip-hop with clear, powerful sound played through six speakers. Maximizing connectivity and control, the system is equipped with standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® as well as voice recognition and Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone operation. The 7-inch touchscreen display screen is a touchscreen or can be controlled by the remote commander knob.
 
Standard SiriusXM Satellite Radio comes with a three-month All Access trial subscription (150+ channels, including commercial-free music). USB ports and an auxiliary input ensure connectivity for all types of devices, and the sporty steering wheel integrates control switches for the audio and phone.
 
Here’s another surprise from the 2020 Yaris Hatchback: both the LE and XLE grades are equipped with navigation hardware; the customer simply needs to buy the accessory SD card through a Toyota dealer to activate navigation capability.
 
Stepping up to the XLE brings a taste of luxury with leatherette seating surfaces (choice of gray or black), automatic climate control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic LED headlamps, and leather-trimmed steering wheel, shift knob and parking brake handle.
 
Big Safety in a Small Car
 
The 2020 Yaris Hatchback will come equipped as standard with a Low-speed Pre-collision Safety System in both model grades (standard on the Yaris Sedan, too). The system scans the road ahead for potential vehicle collisions. If a potential frontal collision is detected, an audio/visual alert and braking assistance are designed to automatically activate. Should the driver not respond, this system may automatically apply the brakes.
 
The Yaris Hatchback comes standard with an advanced active safety system that includes Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Brake Override System (BOS). The array of six airbags includes curtain airbags that help protect front and rear seat occupants.
 
Taut, Toned Athlete
 
The taut lines of the 2020 Yaris Hatchback are stretched over strong, athletic bones. The body structure comprises 65 percent ultra-high tensile steels and is based on a continuous framework using straight beams wherever possible for maximum strength. The high structural integrity allows the MacPherson strut front suspension and torsion-beam rear suspension to be tuned for ride comfort and handling agility that exemplify the model’s “class above” driving dynamics. Translation: the Yaris Hatchback is a hoot to drive and a comfortable commuter.
 
The Yaris Hatchback’s tenacious handling is baked into the engineering, not just added on with fat tires and stiff suspension. A rigid steering mount provides a direct yet light feel, and the brakes are tuned to yield a progressive feel when cornering. Entering the curve, the brake pedal provides smooth operation, then leads into a more rigid feel as g-force rises.
 
Punching Above Its Class
 
Yaris gets its high appetite for fun and low appetite for fuel from a 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine that delivers 106 horsepower. High-compression (12.0:1) and direct fuel injection give the engine ultra-quick responsiveness that’s ideally matched to the standard 6-speed automatic transmission. The transmission’s torque converter locks in all gears for quicker, more direct shifts and greater fuel efficiency. Another surprise in this class is a Sport Mode, which changes the car’s personality with enhanced acceleration response.
 
The tight structure and finely tuned suspension don’t work alone in providing a comfortable ride. The 2020 Yaris Hatchback employs extensive sound-absorbing measures, including a noise-insulating windshield, to block noise paths into the cabin. Sound-absorbing material inside the tailgate, parcel shelf and spare wheel well help to reduce high-frequency noise entering the cabin from the rear.
 
Limited Warranty

Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. Standard Toyota Care is a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Adventure-seeking Americans have looked to Toyota for more than 60 years to provide trucks that can take them on and off-road. Now comes a truck that is perfect for those who want to tell their friends they own a truck but never veer off pavement. The Yaris Adventure will make its debut in its native environment of the 2019 New York International Auto Show.
 
Capitalizing on consumers flocking to the small crossover segment, Yaris Adventure answers the question that nobody asked. It’s part truck, part sedan, but 100 percent awesome. Toyota sells every mid- and full-size truck that hits the lot, but Yaris Adventure will fill the void of a subcompact pickup segment that has never truly existed because … well, no one realized they needed it until now. The Yaris Adventure comes complete with a two-seat cabin with storage space behind the seats. The extra cab with rear seating was ditched because it was determined that no one really wants to sit back there anyway. Meanwhile, in the back, a composite inner bed ensures cargo capacity for the most moderate jobs. The Yaris Adventure combines the comfort and fuel economy of a sedan with ideal cargo space, but not so much that friends will ask you to help them move.
 
“Toyota is very excited to debut this product that nobody saw coming,” said a senior executive at Toyota who preferred to remain anonymous. “We’re constantly listening to our customers and reacting to the market. We have to blame the market on this one, as we haven’t had one customer ask for a truck like this.”
 
Creating a segment
 
Just like the RAV4 created the small SUV segment in 1994, the Yaris Adventure creates the subcompact pickup segment. The 52.3-inch bed has a payload of 297 lbs., perfect for hauling coolers to the lake or that third set of golf clubs that just won’t fit in a car trunk (not sure why you’d have three sets of golf clubs though, as the Yaris Adventure only seats two).
 
Class-Leading Everything
 
The Yaris Adventure leads its segment in everything.* It comes standard with a 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine that delivers 103 horsepower and 112 lb-ft of torque, both top of its class.* Its 7.6-inch ground clearance and 42.5-inch legroom are also class-leading. There isn’t a spec on the Yaris Adventure that doesn’t come out on top.*
 
Fun fact: The Yaris Adventure is the only vehicle with a bed that doesn’t come with a full-size spare tire.

Won’t Blend In
 
A bold, passenger-first design gives the 2020 Yaris Adventure a distinct look. The front end projects a gutsy attitude with a hexagon lower front grille and sharp-eyed headlamps. The automatic LED headlamps incorporate daytime running lights, which pair perfectly with the aggressive front bumper complete with tow hooks, perfect for getting pulled out of a situation the vehicle shouldn’t have been in to begin with.
 
At 167.2 inches long, the Yaris Adventure Grade can fit into parking spaces that most other truck owners have to pass up. That’s a real bonus for urban dwellers, even though Yaris Adventure was made to leave the city (via highway).
 
Straying from the Pavement
 
Yaris Adventure off-roading excursions will begin and end with dirt roads. All Yaris Adventures are equipped with coil-spring double wishbone front suspension and leaf spring rear suspensions. This suspension, paired with a 7.6-inch ground clearance, is perfect for taking a curb in a mall parking lot or clearing the shrubs when parking in a friend’s front yard.
 
The Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD that was recently introduced on the 2019 RAV4 will not come standard on Yaris Adventure. It will, however, offer a newly developed AWD system capable of allowing Yaris owners to carefully bring their vehicles out of their underground garage when it snows in the city.
 
Surrounded by Sound
 
The standard 7-inch Display Audio system delivers clear, powerful sound played through two speakers, one in each door. Maximizing connectivity and control, the system is equipped with one USB media port and Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone operation and music streaming.
 
Here’s another surprise from the 2020 Yaris Adventure: no navigation (because anyone smart enough to drive the Yaris Adventure knows exactly where they’re going).
 
Warranty

Due to the extensive testing done on Yaris Adventure, a warranty won’t be offered for this truck because it would be unthinkable that something goes wrong. However, roadside assistance will be offered, as it’s likely the truck will get stuck if it veers too far off road.
