Toyota Earns 'Best Overall Truck' Award from Kelley Blue Book

2013 Toyota Tundra
Kelley Blue Book recently announced its 2013 Image Awards and Toyota won the award for Best Overall Truck Brand.

"This is great news for Toyota and truck lovers," said Ted Klarich, general sales manager of Burien Toyota. "This shows that people think of Toyota as the manufacturer of the best trucks. Not Ford. Not Chevy. Toyota has been working towards this for a long time, so if you love trucks or need a new truck and haven't checked out the 2013 Toyota Tundra or Toyota Tacoma."

According to this Reuters article, "The 2013 Brand Image Awards, presented to the top brands in 13 categories are based on consumer automotive perception data from Kelley Blue Book Market
Intelligence's Brand Watch study.  Brand Watch is an online brand and model
perception tracking study tapping into 12,000+ in-market new-vehicle shoppers
annually on  Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com."

Making this 'image award' even more impressive, as the article points out, is that many people who drive trucks, don't just need a vehicle to get to work, they need a truck to DO their work, so they tend to be very thorough in their research.

"KBB.com visitors who identify themselves as truck shoppers have named Toyota this year's Best Overall Truck Brand.  Cars can get you to work, but people depend on trucks to actually do the work.  When livelihood is on the line, any brand synonymous with dependability and reliability has a real advantage."

The 2013 Toyota Tacoma is built to finish what it starts. Check out the inventory at Burien Toyota of the 2013 Toyota Tacoma.

The 2013 Toyota Tundra is one of the best pickup trucks in the industry, called the "Most Dependable Large Pickup" seven years in a row. Check out the inventory at Burien Toyota of the 2013 Toyota Tundra.

Toyota RAV4 EV Adds to Array of Toyota Vehicles

Last fall, Toyota launched the RAV4 EV and one Toyota executive is talking about how it could meet the needs of many consumers.

Toyota's Executive Program Manager, Sheldon Brown, sat down for a about 15 minutes to do an video interview about the Toyota RAV4 EV and, whether you are into "techy" stuff or not, it is a really interesting interview to watch. Brown discusses the history and development of the Toyota RAV4, a process that started in the early 1990s. I, for one, had no idea that research into the electrification of the powertrain started that long ago.

Brown discusses many aspects of the new RAV4 EV and what makes it an incredible machine. He starts with the fact that the RAV4 EV is based on a great concept, the original RAV4. But in addition to obvious engine changes, the RAV4 EV is "more useful" and bigger.

Here are some of the other improvements over previous models:
  • Performance is "head and shoulders" above other models.
  • Gets an estimated 170 mile range.
  • 5-6 hours for a full charge, but that full charge provides more power and "get up and go."
  • The previous model could do about 80 mph, the current model can go 100 mpg
One of the most telling statements Brown made was when he described how the RAV4 EV is one more product in the array of Toyota products. He said Toyota wants to provide an array of products to allow consumers to purchase what works for them whether it be fuel cell, hybrid electric, plugin hybrid, or electric like the RAV4 EV.

Undoubtedly, the RAV4 EV will scratch the itch of many consumers who desire an electric vehicle.

While the RAV4 EV is not available at Burien Toyota (or any Washington state dealership) yet, exciting things are in the future for Toyota! Check out the inventory of all Toyota RAV4s HERE.

"I bought Toyota Sienna 2013 Limited AWD in March 2013 and had an excellent experience. This dealer is a truecar dealer and I got a very good discount on the top of 0% APR for 60 months. The dealer gave me the president day discount even when it expired. But the most important thing for me is that everybody was courteous and highly professional. I was offered a discount even on the dealer's packages. I received the follow up calls to make sure that I am still happy with my new car :) Appreciate that. There has been a lot of commentary in the Seattle-area news about an elderly couple who found themselves in an unfortunate situation buying a used vehicle.

2013 Toyota Avalon has Solid Ride Luxurious Interior

2013 Toyota Avalon: Affordable Luxury
The 2013 Toyota Avalon is as luxurious on the inside as most “luxury” brands…but buyers get to spend a lot less. In fact, according to a Cars.com video review, you will not get this amount of luxury for less than $35,000 in any other vehicle.

Be sure to watch the entire video review HERE and read the official Cars.com review of the 2013 Toyota Avalon (don’t be misled by the statements “loses its cushiness," which is later clarified in the written review as "sloppiness"). Here are the highlights of what you may want to know about the 2013 Toyota Avalon according to Cars.com:
  • The interior is luxurious, with fine stitching all over the place: on the seats, the center console, etc.
  • The backseat still has ton of room.
  • The exterior sleek design makes the 2013 Toyota Avalon looks much more expensive than it is (mostly because of the massive grill)
  • The drive is “solid” and "firm"
  • Has been technically changed to a “midsize sedan,” but really there is no difference from when it was classified as a “full size” sedan
  • The already huge trunk has been made even larger in the newest version of the Toyota Avalon
  • Gets 21/31 mpg
  • There are three driving modes: Eco, Normal and Sport to suit your driving needs
  • Costs $2,000 less than the outgoing model!

Overall, according to Cars.com, the 2013 Toyota Avalon is a “luxury car without luxury price.”

“People always want more bang for their buck,” said Ted Klarich, general manager of Burien Toyota. “The 2013 Toyota Avalon is a vehicle that will impress your boss, your peers, your friends, anybody! They will be even more impressed that you were smart enough to buy a near luxury car for a non-luxury price. That’s the biggest statement of all, right?”

Toyota i-Road Concept Has Three Wheels, Tons of Fun

The Toyota i-Road at Geneva Motor Show

There have been a flurry of unveils and debuts at the Geneva Motor Show this week, but we can say with confidence one of the most unique, cool and fun-looking concept vehicles came from Toyota with its Toyota i-Road.

At first glance, it may just look like an enclosed motorcycle, but the i-Road actually has three wheels set in tandem. It can seat two in tandem to keep it balanced, only goes about 28 miles per hour using two 2kW engines that allows to go about 30 miles on a single charge.

But the most exciting technology is the i-Road Active Lean technology and "allows you to bomb through bends without tipping over." Here's how it works according to Wired.com (click the link to also see a video of the i-Road):

"Based on speed, gyroscope angle and amount steering input, the i-ROAD’s onboard computer calculates the exact amount of lean required to make a turn thanks to an actuator mounted on both sides of the front suspension. Turn into a left-hand bend and the right wheel pushes down while the left suspension compresses. Additionally, the system is tuned to compensate for rough road surfaces, supposedly making straight-line driving more comfortable in spite of the i-ROAD’s minuscule wheelbase."

Click HERE to see a CNET video of the i-Road in action at the Geneva Motor Show. It looks like a ton of fun to drive.

While the i-Road is only a concept vehicle, we think it could be pretty popular in an urban area like the Seattle area because of it's small, scooter-like environmental footprint AND the fact that it's enclosed takes the Western Washington weather factor out of owning a scooter! How many people do you know in the Puget Sound area who own scooters or motorcycles that only get to ride them four to six months out of the year because it rains so much here? The Toyota i-Road could be a solution to that!

What do you think? Would you buy the Toyota i-Road to satisfy your scooter-desires and defeat the rain?

Toyota Gives 20 Vehicles to Assist with Sandy Relief Efforts

Sandy devastated communities in the north east
In one more example of how Toyota cares for community, Toyota is putting more money where its mouth is by loaning 19 vehicles to the American Red Cross in an effort to provide more relief to those still suffering from the aftereffects of Superstorm Sandy that hit the north east in October 2012. Toyota is also giving one vehicle to a local New Jersey church in hopes it will have a positive impact on that community that was also devastated by the storm.

The gift of these vehicles is in addition to the $1 million and five vehicles Toyota previously donated to assist with Sandy relief.

“We understand the ongoing need for Hurricane Sandy relief ... four months after the disaster,” says Steve Haag, assistant general manager for Toyota’s New York region. “We want to honor those making an impact rebuilding their community after the devastation of Sandy.”

While this may not affect too many of us in the Puget Sound area, employees at Burien Toyota are proud to work for a company that not only says it cares about community, but shows it repeatedly.

"It'd be very easy for a large company like Toyota to say 'We gave our $1 million, we don't need to do any more,' but Toyota didn't do that," Ted Klarich, general manager of Burien Toyota said. "One million dollars is a lot of money, but even four months after the storm, Toyota revisited what it could do to help, determined it could do more, and did so. It's really great to be a part of a company like that. I know that if something major like Sandy were to happen in our community, Toyota would step up and try to help."

The American Red Cross is grateful for Toyota's generosity and continued support of Sandy victims.

“American Red Cross disaster recovery efforts are ongoing across multiple states affected by Superstorm Sandy, including our efforts here in counties from the northern edge to the southern tip of New Jersey. We’re thrilled to have this fleet of Toyota vehicles, a generous donation that will enable the Red Cross to move manpower and resources more efficiently throughout affected regions.”

For more information about how you can help the victims of Superstorm Sandy, visit the American Red Cross website.

Cove to Clover Race Raises Money for Local Charities, Brings Communities Together

Burien and surrounding communities have banded together to create the Cove to Clover Race with the support of local community businesses, like Burien Toyota

This year’s race will be held on April 28. There will be a shoe swap to benefit low-income youth held April 19 and dinner held April 27 (more on those below). The Cove to Clover Race includes a 5k, 10k, “Snakezilla”half marathon, and Wee Race (one mile) for kids.

“This is a labor of love,” said John Nelson, Cove to Clover Race Director. “We are focusing on getting kids outdoors away from devices. Outdoors is way more fun than an iPhone. [The Cove to Clover Race] is about bringing four different communities together to do something good.”

Now in its fifth year, the Cove to Clover Race is an all-encompassing event with a shoe swap to provide lightly used shoes to low-income students, a carbo-load dinner the night before the race, and a fully supported 5K race, 10K race, half marathon, and one mile run/walk for kids (parents are encouraged to walk/run with their children). Because Cove to Clover has no paid staff, all funds raised by the race…yes 100 percent…are redistributed to local charities like the local food bank, the Highline School Foundation, and Hospitality House. Also supported is Cove to Clover’s outdoors skills program for underprivileged youth.

According to the Cove to Clover Race website, “The Cove to Clover event has evolved and is a truly grass-roots production. The race was originally organized by a group of friends with the mission of producing a professional and fun event that showcases the Highline community at its best. What’s evolved has been an exercise in positive cooperation among many entities: government, businesses, non-profits, schools and neighbors.”

Nelson admits that because Cove to Clover is, in fact, raising money for other charities instead of itself, it takes some of the stress off of needing to achieve a specific monetary amount and is simply a project of passion to help the community. With many different local sponsors, including Burien Toyota as title sponsor, and lots of community support, Nelson hopes the Cove to Clover Race can become an anchor in the community where people return year after year and bring their friends.

Who benefits? The children and adults of Burien, Des Moines, SeaTac, and Normandy Park. Nelson believes that banding together to support events like the Cove to Clover Race, whether as a sponsor, participant, or donor, will make the community better.

“When we suffer together, it brings us together,” said Nelson. “When we suffer as a community, when we try to make it up that hill, we might walk up the hill, but we will make it.”

Whether you want to run or not, there are lots of ways to get involved in addition to registering for the 5K, 10K, or Wee Race.

Snakezilla Half Marathon
While the Cove to Clover Race has been around since 2009, this is the first year for the Snakezilla half marathon. According to the website, you’ll get a finishers medal when you complete your run and survive “snake hill.” In addition to registering on the website, there is also information on how to double your donation with corporate matching, including Boeing.

Become an Angel
Cove to Clover wants children of all income levels to get involved in the Cove to Clover Race. You can sponsor a child or multiple children simply by going to the website and registering for the race as an Angel. It only costs $10 per student and your donation can be directed to a school of your choice.

Shoe Swap: now until April 19
There are many young people in our community who need athletic shoes so they can safely and comfortably participate in the Cove to Clover Race and other athletic activities. Bring your old, but lightly worn, running shoes to the Normandy Park Athletic Club (located at the Normandy Park Town Center) until April 19 for the shoe swap! Youth who need shoes can come to the Normandy Park Town Center 5-9pm on April 19 to find the pair of running shoes right for them.

Snake Pit Dinner: 6-9pm, Saturday April 27
While carbo-loading before any athletic event is important, the Snake Pit Dinner is more than your typical spaghetti dinner. For $15 (adults) or $5 (12 and younger), diners will get a homemade pasta dinner “prepared by a wonderful volunteer group of Italian mothers from our community who care about what goes on your plate. Expect a serious dish of pasta and complimentary glass of wine.”

Not only will you get your carbo-load on, you will be entertained with live music (a little Frank Sinatra sung by Joe Jewell) and there will even be a petting zoo sponsored by “A Place for Pets”  to keep the kids entertained while you savor your meal. You will leave the Snake Pit Dinner with a picture of python around your neck and a nifty Snake Brand wristband!

And the best part is all proceeds from the Snake Pit Dinner go to the Des Moines Parks and Recreation Youth Scholarship fund.

“Our goal is to get lots of kids running and raise money for local charities,” Nelson said. “We couldn’t do it without Burien Toyota and Burien Chevrolet. I want to give a big thank you to Toyota because they were involved with Cove to Clover even before it was a big deal.”

If you are interested in participating in the Cove to Clover Race as a runner, Angel, organizer of a fundraising team, or sponsor, go to their website at www.covetocolver.com. If you have questions, contact Race Director John Nelson at jonelson@covetoclover.com.
