5 Things to Do in the 2020 Prius

Cookies and milk. Peanut butter and jelly. Chips and salsa. If there’s one thing to learn from these classic combinations, it’s that great things can happen when one embraces the best of both worlds.
With an impressive charge and an EPA-estimated 54 combined mpg on top of that, the new 2020 Toyota Prius Hybrid and 2020 Prius Prime remain automotive titans when it comes to efficiency. Now, with some exciting new features, Prius adds on to its many accolades, rolling out the best-equipped model in its two-decade reign.
So, what can the next generation of Prius driver do in the new Prius (except enjoy fewer trips to the pump)?
Travel Safe and Scenic
Some drivers like to focus on getting from Point A to Point B as efficiently as possible. Others like to see the sights and will tack on a Point C and D. Then there are those who seem to know every attraction in a 50-mile radius and suddenly they are two hours behind, and three ice cream stands into their trip.
With the new standardized Safety Connect on all Prius models, drivers can travel between points with the comfort of knowing they will get to their destination safely, even if that’s Point Z.
Keep Everyone Connected
Everyone has been there: sitting in the back seat, five hours into a road trip. The only thing keeping the energy levels high are the song selections. Fortunately, the perfect song is queued up. Unfortunately, the phone is about to die.
With the addition of two USB ports in the back seat, there are even more ways to charge, connect and keep the road trip moving all the way down Eisenhower’s gift to a restless nation, interstates.
Sync Up With Friends
Speaking of road trips, there’s an unspoken rule that when it comes to hitting the highway, the person in the driver’s seat keeps the car moving safely, while the person in the passenger seat handles everything else.
It’s a big responsibility, but with Apple CarPlay®, which now comes standard on every model for 2020, and standard SiriusXM® and, it’s easy to throw on a playlist and keep the traveling mood rolling. And with a built-in Amazon Alexa feature, the Prius delivers a driving experience that perfectly syncs to how people live and move.
Enjoy Glare-Free Views
Let’s state the obvious — the sun is great. It helps plants grow, it makes the sand warm and it really brings out the color in stained-glass windows. Yet, despite all its splendor, the sun can be a nuisance when it gets in a driver’s eyes.
Fortunately, with a new extended sun visor for the 2020 Prius Prime, drivers can appreciate the sun for all its best traits without having to deal with unwanted glare.
Take the Road Less Traveled
Just imagine: a Prius charging up a rocky road, weaving through a forest path or kicking up clouds on a dusty trail. Seems far-fetched? Not anymore. With AWD-e (all-wheel drive electronic), a new generation of drivers can look forward to reaching all new levels of verticality.
With these new features and more to ignite the senses, the 2020 Prius Hybrid and 2020 Prius Prime offer a whole new driving experience for those who thrive at the intersection of greatness.

Dare to Explore the PNW in the Toyota 4Runner Venture Edition New for 2020

There is no better vehicle to get you to your Cascade and Puget Sound adventures than the all-new 2020 Toyota 4Runner!

  • Standard Yakima Megawarrior Rack and Roof Rack Crossbars
  • Features Gunmetal-Colored 17-inch TRD Wheels
  • Black Outer Mirrors, Door Handles, Rear Spoiler and Badges
  • New 2020 Multimedia System Includes 8-inch Touchscreen and Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa Compatibility
  • Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) Now Standard on all 2020 4Runners
The Toyota 4Runner is no stranger to the road less traveled. In 2020, the body-on-frame, do-anything SUV receives some important additions, including Toyota’s active safety system TSS-P on all grades and updated infotainment that includes a larger 8-inch touchscreen, Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Along with those key updates (and a few others), the 2020 4Runner will also come in the Venture Edition that boasts more utility and style for where the road takes you… even if there are no roads involved.
Venture Capitalist: Investing in Adventure
4Runner Venture Edition adds more utility and flair in an awesome package designed for explorers everywhere. One of the most notable features is the standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack. Supported by the included roof rack cross bars, the Megawarrior rack is constructed of heavy-duty steel and provides additional roof-top storage in its spacious tray that measures 52 inches in length, 48 inches in width and 6.5 inches in height.
Inside, 4Runner Venture Edition floors gain additional protection from the elements thanks to standard all-weather floor mats. A rear cargo mat will also come standard, and an additional cargo solution comes in the form of an available rear sliding cargo deck.
A host of exterior changes set Venture Edition apart from the rest. Gunmetal-colored 17-inch TRD wheels will be fitted at all four corners. The Toyota logos at the front and rear of the 4Runner, along with the 4Runner badge on the rear tailgate, will be black on Venture Edition, while additional black accents will include the outer mirrors, door handles and rear spoiler. Although based on the TRD Off-Road Premium, Venture Edition ditches the TRD Off-Road badging from the C-pillar for a cool, minimalist look.
Ready to Tackle the Trail
Venture Edition is built on 4Runner’s proven body-on-frame construction that features a four-link rear axle and coil-spring suspension. It is equipped with a part-time 4WD system that features a 2-speed transfer case with selectable low range. When the going really gets rough, a selectable rear locker comes standard to provide added traction when needed in low range.
Those features are just the start of the 4×4 tools in Venture Edition’s arsenal. Standard CRAWL control provides additional low-range off-road functionality by regulating engine speed and braking force to slowly move the vehicle in forward or reverse at one of five driver-selectable low-speed settings. When engaged, CRAWL allows the driver to focus on steering in challenging terrain without having to also modulate the throttle or brake pedal. Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) can help maintain traction by distributing drive force to any one wheel in contact with the ground when it senses wheel slippage. Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) is another traction tool that helps improves grip by controlling wheel spin based on the terrain setting (like dirt, sand or rock) selected by the driver.
Active Safety, More Standard Features for 2020
For 2020, the 4Runner makes Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) standard on all grades. This advanced active safety system includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning System, Automatic High Beams and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).
Additional tech can also be found inside the cabin of 4Runner, as every grade features an updated multimedia system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa compatibility, all of which can be controlled on 4Runner’s new 8-inch touchscreen. The sound system includes 8 speakers through the cabin, and the multimedia system features HandsFree Bluetooth phone and music operation.
In front of the driver is a new instrumentation panel that includes a 4.2-inch MID screen to control TSS-P safety functions and provide additional vehicle details, such as tire pressure, average fuel economy and more. Rear seat passengers will no doubt appreciate the addition of two USB ports to charge devices. Venture Edition will also boast standard Smart Key with Push Button Start.
Inside, Venture Edition is fitted with SofTex-trimmed powered and heated front seats with “TRD” lettering on the headrests. SofTex-trimmed seats are also featured in the second row.
The Stars Align on Safety
TSS-P isn’t the only safety system found on 4Runner, as all grades also come standard with Toyota’s Star Safety System that includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with traction control (TRAC, or A-TRAC with 4WD), an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST) brake-override system.
Eight standard airbags include driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System, TAP (thorax, abdomen, pelvis) front seat-mounted side airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags and all-row Roll-Sensing Side Curtain Airbags (RSCA).
Limited Warranty and ToyotaCare
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000-mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and corrosion with no mileage limitation. 4Runner also comes standard with ToyotaCare, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

2020 Toyota Prius Brings Its “A” Game with Standard Apple CarPlay® and Many More Features

  • One of the world’s leading Hybrid with up to EPA-estimated 58 MPG City
  • AWD-e Models with Electric All-Wheel Drive+50 MPG Combined
  • Safety Connect Standard Across Prius Model Line for 2020
  • New Toyota Audio 7-in. Touch-Screen Display on L Eco, LE and XLE
  • New Apple CarPlay® and Amazon Alexa Compatibility on All Model Grades
  • Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) Standard Across All Grades
If the 2020 Toyota Prius could talk, it might congratulate other carmakers for following its lead and offering more gas/electric hybrids. The more hybrids made, the less fuel used and the lower carbon emissions. The Prius, though, in all humility, would also point out that it was the world’s first mass-produced hybrid model more than 20 years ago, that it is one of the world’s best-selling hybrids and that Toyota produces more hybrid models than any other carmaker in the United States.
Then the Prius would highlight its 58 city / 53 highway/56 combined EPA-estimated mpg (L Eco grade). It would show family pictures, of course, including its segment-exclusive AWD-e model, which features an electronic all-wheel drive system which, at speeds up to 43mph, helps give drivers more control when weather and road conditions are less than ideal.
Prius would finish the conversation by emphasizing that all 2020 models now come equipped with standard Toyota Safety Connect and upgraded audio with Apple CarPlay® and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Previously, Safety Connect was available only on the top-line Limited grade. The system, which includes Emergency Assistance, Stolen Vehicle Locator, Roadside Assistance and Automatic Collision Notification, comes with a complimentary three-year trial subscription.

TNGA Means High Strength, Low Weight
The fourth-generation Prius is built around the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), a platform that integrates a high-strength body structure, multi-link rear suspension and a low center of gravity. TNGA endows Prius with a highly engaging driving character combined with exemplary ride smoothness and a quiet cabin.
Hot-stamped and high tensile steels, which allow for intricate forms that are both lightweight and strong, are used extensively throughout the body. Aluminum components, including the hood, rear doorframes, and brake calipers, help keep vehicle weight low. Innovative fastening methods, including laser screw welding and advanced adhesives, contribute to structural strength.
How Prius Operates
The current, fourth-generation Prius continues to be a leader in the hybrid world. Its Hybrid Synergy Drive system combines the output of a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine and two motor-generators through an electronically controlled planetary-type continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The Electronically Controlled Brake System coordinates control between the regenerative braking and the vehicle’s hydraulic brake force to provide brake performance. The gasoline engine is itself a paragon of high efficiency. Thanks to ultra-low internal friction and efficient combustion, it exceeds 40 percent thermal efficiency, which is among the highest in the world for a gasoline engine.
The front-wheel-drive (FWD) Prius is a real fuel miser. The L Eco grade has 58 mpg city / 53 mpg highway / 56 mpg combined EPA-estimated fuel economy. The LE, XLE and Limited, which offer more equipment, have 54 mpg city / 50 mpg highway / 52 mpg combined.
The Prius front-wheel drive models use a lithium ion battery, while the AWD-e versions employ a nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery. The latter technology is inherently resilient to extreme temperature change to provide AWD-e models with excellent battery performance in cold-weather conditions. Speaking of cold weather, the XLE grade (both FWD and AWD-e) features upgraded SofTex®-trimmed, heated front seats as standard.
A Design that Just Works
Every facet of the Prius contributes to its stellar fuel economy. The Prius design slips through the air with minimal wind resistance, thanks to an ultra-low 0.24 coefficient of drag (Cd), which is among the lowest of current production passenger cars. An automatic grille shutter reduces aerodynamic drag by closing when airflow to the radiator is not needed. Even the air conditioning system, which uses a quiet electric compressor, works intelligently to maximize energy efficiency. While ensuring passenger comfort, the Smart-flow (S-FLOW) mode directs airflow only to seated occupants to conserve energy.
Standard Bi-LED headlamps and LED rear combination lamps not only provide better light than halogens, but they also reduce energy consumption and give a longer service life. A full-width glass panel beneath the rear spoiler aids rearward visibility while also serving as a distinctive Prius design feature. A backup camera comes standard on all grades, as well.
In addition to exceptional fuel efficiency, something else all Prius models share in common is outstanding versatility. The front-wheel drive models offer up to 65.5 cu. ft. of cargo space with the rear seatbacks folded down, which is more than in some small SUVs. The Prius AWD-e models offer 62.7 cu. ft. of space, the small difference due to accommodating the AWD-e system.
Expanding carrying options, the Prius models offer available Genuine Toyota Accessory cargo crossbars for roof rack attachments, such as for carrying bikes, kayaks, snowboards, or a cargo carrier.
AWD-Electrifies Traction
In 2019, Toyota introduced the Prius AWD-e, the first-ever Prius with all-wheel drive. While enhancing traction for drivers, the Prius AWD-upholds the model’s penchant for outstanding efficiency, with 52 mpg city / 48 mpg highway / 50 mpg combined EPA fuel economy estimates. That easily makes Prius AWD-e one of the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive-equipped passenger cars available in the U.S.
The “e” in AWD-is the key to offering the extra grip of all-wheel drive while still sipping fuel. The automatic, on-demand system does not require a center differential or other torque-apportioning device, nor does it need a front-to-rear driveshaft. Instead, the “e” in AWD-e stands for electronic.
An independent electric, magnet-less rear motor (a Toyota first) powers the rear wheels away from a stop up to 6 mph, and then, when conditions demand, at speeds up to 43 mph. By recognizing when all-wheel-drive is not needed, this intelligent on-demand system runs in front-wheel drive as much as possible to maximize fuel economy.
High Value, High Tech
The Prius debuted revised styling for 2019, as well as the new grade strategy used throughout the Toyota family. The 2020 Prius continues with the L Eco, LE, XLE and Limited grades for front-wheel drive, while offering the AWD-e model in LE and XLE grades. The Supersonic Red and Electric Storm Blue colors that debuted for 2019 also continue for 2020.
All Prius models share interior features including the familiar central screen interface. The 4.2-in. color Dual Multi-Information Display with customizable screens includes Energy Monitor, Hybrid System Indicator and Eco Score, Eco Savings Record, Drive Monitor, Eco Wallet, Eco Diary, Climate Control, driver support systems, audio system content, and navigation system content. On AWD-e models, the display adds an AWD-e system indicator.
In addition to newly standard Safety Connect, 7-in. Toyota Audio with touch-screen display, Apple CarPlay® and Amazon Alexa for 2020, highlights of the LE include driver’s door Smart Key System, Push Button Start and remote illuminated entry, a rear wiper, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Intelligent Clearance Sonar with Intelligent Parking Assist.
The standard Toyota Audio system includes the 7-in. touch-screen display, AM/FM CD player, 6 speakers, auxiliary audio jack, one USB 2.0 port with iPod® connectivity and two 2.1-amp USB charge ports, advanced voice recognition, Bluetooth® hands-free phone capability, phone book access and music streaming, Siri® Eyes Free, and an integrated backup camera display.
The XLE grade adds 17-in. alloy wheels (15-in. on XLE AWD-e), SofTex-trimmed heated tilt/telescopic steering wheel, SofTex-trimmed seats including 8-way power and heated front seats, 3-door Smart Key system, and Qi wireless phone charging tray that accommodates larger phones.
The Prius Limited grade features top-of-the-line tech, including an Adaptive Front Lighting System with auto-leveling headlamps; Toyota Premium JBL® Audio with navigation and 11.6-in. touch-screen display. A standard Color Head-Up Display (HUD) shows the speedometer and Hybrid System Indicator in the driver’s line of sight.
Standard Toyota Safety Sense
All 2020 Prius models, including the Prius AWD-e versions, come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P). Using millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera sensor to help detect a pedestrian, a vehicle, lane markers and headlights in the surrounding area, TSS-P provides a comprehensive bundle of active safety features including: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/ PD), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/ SA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).
Because all Prius models, under certain circumstances, can operate in battery mode alone, during which they make little to no noise, they incorporate a Vehicle Proximity Notification System (VPNS) to help alert pedestrians and cyclists.
Peace-of-Mind Warranty Protection
Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. A 60-month warranty covers the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against corrosion with no mileage limitation. The hybrid-related components, including the HV battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are covered for 96 months/100,000 miles.
The Prius also comes standard with ToyotaCare, a plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first. For Prius, the complimentary 24-hour roadside assistance is extended to three years (over the standard two years on other models) and unlimited mileage.

Toyota Installs Stationary Fuel Cell Generator Based on the Mirai FC System at its Honsha Plant in Japan

Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) announces it has developed a stationary fuel cell generator (FC generator) that makes use of the fuel cell system (FC system) equipped in the Mirai Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV). The FC generator has been installed within the Honsha Plant grounds in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, and verification tests have now commenced.

The FC generator uses two each of the FC system components equipped in the Mirai, including its FC stack, power control unit (PCU), and secondary battery. By using components from the Mirai FC system, Toyota seeks to produce a high-performance generator at a reasonable price. Development on the generator was carried out jointly by Toyota and Toyota Energy Solutions, Inc.

For the verification tests, the electricity generated by the FC generator will be used inside the Honsha Plant; the generator will operate continuously for 24 hours per day, and generate a rated output of 100 kilowatts. The energy efficiency―the amount of electricity it generates per unit of hydrogen―the stability of the generated output, and the durability and ease of maintenance of the generator will be verified and evaluated.

Based on the results of the verification tests, Toyota intends to use FC generators as private power generators in an increasing number of plants. The generators will be fueled by hydrogen emitted both during the production process for FC system components, as well as during evaluation and testing processes; in this way, Toyota intends to develop and implement technologies that make effective use of hydrogen. In 2015, Toyota announced its Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, one of which was the Plant Zero CO2 Emissions Challenge. In order to fulfil this challenge, Toyota will continue to steadily engage in reducing the amount of CO2 it emits during its production processes.

As part of its efforts to expand use of the FC system it developed for the FCEV, Toyota intends to consider the practical realization of the FC generator. This entails carrying out research and development and discussing the establishment of business models aimed at improving the generator's product appeal, by enhancing its energy efficiency and durability, making it more compact, and reducing costs.

Camry TRD and Avalon TRD Bring Track-Inspired Styling and Performance to the Streets

Toyota’s First-Ever Camry TRD and Avalon TRD
• Track-Inspired Handling Upgrades
• Aggressive Cat-Back Dual Exhaust
• Exclusive Matte-Black 19-Inch Alloy Wheels
• Calty-Designed Aero kit
• Unique TRD Interior Trim
PLANO, Texas (September 9, 2019) – Many Toyota enthusiasts already know the equity behind the TRD badge seen on the brand’s hardcore, off-road-ready pickups and SUVs. Now, Toyota Racing Development (TRD) brings its track tuning that blends greater agility, precision and body control with attention-grabbing design and everyday drivability to the Camry TRD and Avalon TRD.
These two sedans have an appetite for curves and a distinct exhaust note bristling with attitude. With aerodynamic-enhanced styling by Calty, Toyota’s U.S. design studio, and chassis performance fortified by TRD, these revved-up Camry and Avalon models are the track-inspired sedans for which enthusiasts have been asking.
When Toyota introduced the new-generation 2018 Camry, sales of the sporty SE and XSE versions spiked. A year later, Toyota introduced the all-new 2019 Avalon, which came in an available XSE grade for the first time ever. These sedans are stylish and fun to drive. Toyota is pushing the limit even further with Camry TRD and Avalon TRD, both with greater track-inspired handling performance and styling. These models include most standard content from the Camry SE grade and Avalon XSE grade, combined with exclusive TRD chassis enhancements and tuning.
 Roaring to Go
The new Camry TRD and Avalon TRD embody TRD’s holistic approach to vehicle enhancement. Notably, both are powered by Toyota’s renowned 301 horsepower DOHC 3.5-liter V6 and 8-speed automatic transmission with sport mode and paddle shifters. The V6 breathes easier with a TRD-tuned cat-back dual exhaust, giving both models a throatier idle and acceleration sound.
Thicker underbody braces increase torsional rigidity, and unique coil springs lower both vehicles by 0.6 inches for a reduced center of gravity. Specially tuned shock absorbers and lighter 19 x 8.5-inch matte black alloy wheels complement the new springs and lower stance to improve body control, handling agility and steering precision. The front brakes are larger with 12.9-inch diameter rotors and dual-piston calipers compared to 12.0-inch rotors and single piston calipers found on XSE grades.
Brake performance was also tuned to provide more direct feedback, matching the sporty dynamics of the vehicle. Active Cornering Assist was also added to both models, reducing understeering by providing brake force to the inner drive wheel when the accelerator pedal is depressed.
Calty gave both models striking aero elements, taking advantage of the edgier designs of the new-generation Camry and Avalon and aggressive stance of the TRD-modified chassis. The aerodynamic body kit, which includes the front splitter, side aero skirts, trunk lid spoiler, and rear diffuser, blends a bold styling element and improves high speed vehicle stability to aid in driver confidence.  Add to it red pinstriping, red-painted brake calipers, and red TRD badging and both sedans have a road-hungry look.
These TRD sedans will continue to deliver all the quality, durability and reliability that is synonymous with Toyota. Both models will come standard with Toyota Safety Sense-P, a suite of advanced driver-assist technologies.
Camry TRD
Toyota’s commitment to enthusiast drivers is apparent in the level of detail that TRD and Calty poured into these models.
On Camry TRD, the matte-black 19 x 8.5-inch alloy wheels are a half-inch wider, yet 3.1 pounds lighter (each) than the 19 x 8.0-inch alloy wheels on the XSE grade. Paired with Bridgestone Potenza 235/40R19 summer tires, this combination reduces unsprung mass, increases lateral grip, and quickens turn-in response.
Camry’s chassis is further enhanced with stiffer coil springs and front/rear sway bars for increased roll stiffness of 44% in the front and 67% in the rear. To complement spring changes, a unique set of TRD shock absorbers were developed to control vehicle vertical and roll movement during spirited driving while still maintaining a plush on-road ride.
In addition to the TRD aero body features, Camry TRD wears a gloss black front grille with sport mesh insert and black exterior badging. Available colors include the appropriately dramatic Supersonic Red, Windchill Pearl, Celestial Silver Metallic — all three of which are two-toned — and Midnight Black Metallic. Polished stainless steel TRD exhaust tips on the catback exhaust complete the exterior makeover.
Inside, the Camry TRD driver will be seeing red – in the trim, that is. The cabin is decked out with Black Sport SofTex®-trimmed front seats with fabric inserts, red accents and red-stitched TRD embroidered headrests. The leather-wrapped steering wheel also has red stitching, and even the seatbelts are red. A shift knob with an embossed TRD logo, along with unique TRD floor and trunk mats, and a TRD MID visual start up complete the cabin upgrades.
Camry TRD will be on sale in September and have an MSRP of $31,040.
Avalon TRD
TRD’s modifications work the same magic on the Avalon as they do on the Camry. Avalon TRD gets Black Sport SofTex-trimmed heated front seats with Ultra-suede inserts and red accents. Its interior is also adorned with red-stitched TRD-embroidered headrests, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching, red seatbelts, a shift knob with an embossed TRD logo and red stitching, and unique TRD floor and trunk mats.
The matte-black 19 x 8.5-inch alloy wheels paired with Michelin 235/40R19 all-weather tires reduce unsprung mass by 18 pounds compared to the 19-inch wheels on the 2019 Avalon XSE. As on Camry TRD, the unbridled tone of the 301-hp V6 bellows through stainless steel TRD exhaust tips. The red pinstriping on the aero body elements, and the red seatbelts and accents complete Avalon TRD’s styling.
Avalon TRD is on sale in dealerships now and is available in Supersonic Red, Windchill Pearl, Celestial Silver Metallic and Midnight Black Metallic. It has an MSRP of $42,300.

The new Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) for the Double Cab version provides nearly 360-degree views around the truck for easier, safer maneuvering in tight situations.
TRD Trio Updates
The Tacoma TRD models, infused with ultimate capability by Toyota Racing Development, feature extensive upgrades for 2020. For starters, the 2020 TRD Sport will get a host of updates, including a new front grille design, new 17-inch wheel, LED foglamp and available LED/DRL headlamp, a new chrome insert taillamp, passenger Smart Key, and Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) is available on Double Cab models. TRD Sport also receives the larger 8-inch touchscreen and 10-way power adjustable seat found on all grades SR5 and up when equipped with the V6 engine.
For 2020, the TRD Off-Road also gets a new grille up front, LED foglamp, LED/DRL headlamp availability, chrome insert taillamp and the addition of passenger Smart Key. It also, on Double Cab models, receives Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM) for improved visibility of the terrain around the truck. Like TRD Sport, it also receives the updated multimedia with 8-inch touchscreen and power adjustable driver’s seat.
Headlining the TRD trio, the Tacoma TRD Pro backs up its revised look with new function. The new front grille design, unique sequential LED/DRL headlamps, new 16-inch wheel design, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, and black-insert taillamps give the TRD Pro a tougher stance and steely lighting signature. The newly available Army Green exterior color is exclusive to all TRD Pros for 2020, and Magnetic Gray gets added to the mix of Midnight Black Metallic and Super White to offer four color options on all TRD Pros.
A close look at the new cast-aluminum 16-inch wheels reveals the level of engineering detail lavished on this model. Each wheel is 4.188 lbs. lighter than on the 2019 model. That adds up to a significant weight reduction where it really counts to enhance off-road capability. TRD engineers also tweaked the shock and spring tuning to complement the lighter new wheels to improve off-road ride and handling.
You need more than a tough chassis for trail driving. You need to see obstacles before they become hazards. For 2020, the Tacoma TRD Pro provides more sets of eyes with the new Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) + Multi Terrain Monitor (MTM). The driver can select front, side, or rear views for nearly 360-degree visibility. When the going really gets rough, 5-second front undercarriage projected-path video playback can help the driver avoid potential unseen obstacles.
Meanwhile, no matter how rough it gets outside the TRD Pro, inside there’s plenty of comfort with a new 10-way power adjustable seat, plus the powerful capability of the Premium Audio system with 8-inch touchscreen (and JBL Premium Audio on automatic transmission models). For added convenience, Smart Key functionality now extends to the front passenger door. A power moonroof continues as standard.
Adventure Machine
On Tacoma 4×4 models, 4WDemand part-time four-wheel drive uses an electronically controlled transfer case and either an Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD) or an electronically controlled locking rear differential. Auto LSD is an electronic, brake-actuated system that functions like a mechanical limited slip differential when activated at low speeds. The TRD Off Road and Pro models feature a selectable, electronically controlled locking rear differential to provide supreme traction in off-road environments.
Tacoma TRD Sport models are equipped with sport-tuned shocks, while the TRD Off-Road models feature an off-road tuned suspension that uses Bilstein shocks. The TRD Off-Road model gives the driver even more control in off-road situations with the Multi-Terrain Select system (automatic transmission only). With it, the driver can choose a drive mode to match different types of terrain such as loose rock, or mud and sand. Each input regulates wheel spin by adjusting throttle and brake pressure to provide optimal traction on almost any terrain.
The TRD Off-Road model is ready-made for challenging terrain with Locking Rear Differential, Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), clutch Start Cancel (manual transmission only), Active Traction Control, and Crawl Control. Engaging Crawl Control offers one of five low-speed settings to allow the driver to keep focus on navigating across challenging off-road terrain.
The available Tow Package (standard on all V6 models) includes a Class IV Towing Receiver Hitch, engine oil cooler, transmission fluid cooler (automatic transmission only), power steering cooler, 130-amp alternator, 4- and 7-pin connector with converter, and Trailer-Sway Control (TSC).
TRD Pro Really Earns Its Badge
Inspired by Toyota’s long history of off-road racing success, the Tacoma TRD Pro is aimed squarely at diehard off-road enthusiasts. Take the available TRD-designed Desert Air Intake, for example. It’s designed to help raise the engine’s air intake out of the dust and into cleaner air, helping the Tacoma to perform at its best even when conditions are not.Tacoma TRD Pro wears a heritage-inspired front grille with bold “TOYOTA” lettering, color-keyed surround, blacked-out hood scoop and graphic, color-keyed power outside mirrors with turn signal indicators, color-keyed door handles, black overfenders, and color-keyed rear bumper. Available TRD Pro exterior colors include Midnight Black Metallic, Super White, Magnetic Gray Metallic, and the exclusive Army Green.
Based on the Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4×4 Double Cab short-bed model with either a six-speed manual transmission (with clutch start-cancel switch) or six-speed automatic, the Tacoma TRD Pro comes ready to conquer hill and trail. In addition to the TRD Off-Road grade equipment, the Tacoma TRD Pro adds:
  • FOX 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks tuned by TRD
  • TRD-tuned front springs with a 1-inch front lift
  • TRD-tuned rear suspension with progressive-rate off-road leaf springs
  • TRD Pro aluminum front skid plate with red TRD lettering
  • LED headlights with sequential turn signals TRD Pro inserts
  • Rigid Industries LED fog lights
  • Projector-beam headlights with black bezels, LED daytime running lights (DRL), and auto on/off feature
  • Taillights with black bezels
  • 16-inch TRD black alloy wheels (new, lighter design for 2020) that provide a 1-inch wider track width compared to TRD Off-Road
  • Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Kevlar-reinforced tires
  • TRD Pro hood scoop
  • Special TRD Pro badging
  • TRD-tuned cat-back exhaust
Inside, the Tacoma TRD Pro blends toughness with comfort, incorporating black leather-trimmed heated front seats with TRD Pro logos on the headrests, TRD shift knob, and TRD Pro floor mats. The instrument panel integrates a 4.2-inch color Multi-Information Display with an inclinometer and tilt gauge, plus displays for outside temperature, odometer, trip meters, and average fuel economy.
Solid Foundation
The Tacoma’s foundation for hard work, hard play, and durability is built from extensive use of high-strength steel in the frame and hot-stamped, ultra-high strength steel in the body. All models are equipped with double wishbone coil-spring front suspension and leaf-spring rear suspension with staggered outboard-mounted gas shocks. This setup delivers a steady on-road ride and bolsters off-road driving capability.
Tacoma power comes in two levels. The standard 2.7-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine with VVT-i produces 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of peak torque. The available 3.5-liter V6 employs Toyota’s innovative VVT-iW technology and Atkinson-cycle combustion to maximize efficiency. Toyota’s D-4S fuel injection system incorporates both direct injection and port injectors. The bottom line is an impressive 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of peak torque.
Each of the Tacoma’s engines can be teamed to a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with intelligence (ECT-i), while the V6 can also be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. When equipped with an optional V6 Tow Package, depending upon the model grade, the Tacoma can pull up to 6,800 lbs. (per the SAE J2807 tow standard).
Capability and Comfort
High capability doesn’t preclude comfort in the Tacoma, which rides along quietly thanks to enhanced door seals, a multi-layer acoustic windshield, sound-absorbing headliner, and a floor silencer pad. The cabin exudes a high-quality ambience with soft-wrapped trim and metallic accents.
The SR and SR5 are equipped with fabric-trimmed seats, while seating for the TRD Sport and Off-Road grades is uniquely upholstered with embossed fabric that conveys a dynamic and rugged feel. The TRD Pro features leather-trimmed seating plus heated front seats, and the premium Limited grade offers seats trimmed in rich leather.
Available premium features such as Qi wireless charging, Smart Key with push-button start, leather-trimmed seats, power tilt/slide moonroof and dual-zone automatic climate control make the Tacoma an outstanding everyday vehicle.
32 Configurations
The 2020 Tacoma is available in 32 models based on two cab types, the extended Access Cab and four-door Double Cab. Each is available in 4×2 or 4×4 configurations in a wide array of model grades. Access Cab models offer under-seat rear storage space, with fold-up seat cushions to maximize carrying space. Double Cab models feature 60/40 split rear seats with adjustable headrests and under-seat storage.
The Access Cab models ride on a 127.4-inch wheelbase and have a 73.7-inch-long bed. The Double Cab is offered in two versions: the 127.4-inch wheelbase with a 60.5-inch bed or 140.6-inch wheelbase with the 73.7-inch bed. All models use an inner bed made from a sheet-molded composite (SMC) deck and tough, durable walls that are 10-percent lighter than steel.
The tailgate’s easy-lowering feature allows it to retract slowly to prevent it from slamming down. An available factory-installed tri-fold hard tonneau cover secures gear out of sight.
The versatile bed deck features two-tier loading and an integrated deck-rail utility system with four standard adjustable tie-down cleats. Toyota dealers offer a range of Genuine Toyota Accessories that work in conjunction with the deck rail system. Examples include a cargo divider that locks into the rails to help keep cargo from sliding around the bed, and mini tie-downs with hooks that also help to secure cargo. An available 120V/400W power point further extends the bed’s utility.
Designed in America
Tacoma’s chiseled face is anchored by a bold, hexagonal grille and a tall, muscular hood. Its slim, projection beam headlights can be outfitted with available LED daytime running lights. The overfenders accentuate the tough high-lift image while functioning to accommodate the suspension’s generous wheel travel.
The Tacoma’s wide array of model configurations and options give customers free rein to personalize their vehicles. The Tacoma’s exterior color palette includes Cavalry Blue, Midnight Black Metallic, Barcelona Red, Quicksand, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Silver Metallic, Super White, Cement and, exclusively for the 2020 TRD Pro, Army Green.
Toyota dealers in addition offer a large selection of accessories, including TRD performance components, that expand Tacoma’s utility, comfort, and driving fun.
Multimedia Systems
The 2020 Tacoma’s multimedia system improved across the board. Not only does each Tacoma model get a larger touchscreen, but each vehicle now features Android Auto™, Apple CarPlay®, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Each vehicle features a six-speaker sound system that includes Handsfree Bluetooth® phone and music capability, USB media port, 2 USB charge ports, and an integrated backup camera display. All vehicles offer SiriusXM capability and include a 3-month All Access Trial.
While the SR model features a 7-inch touchscreen, SR5 models and up are all fitted with an 8-inch touchscreen display. The TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road models offer an available Premium Audio system that adds dynamic navigation. Premium Audio is available on the TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road grades but comes standard on Limited and TRD Pro, and it includes six JBL® speakers and subwoofer amplifier.
Safety Standout
Along with standard TSS-P, the Toyota Tacoma also touts the Star Safety System, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop brake override technology (SST). Every Tacoma has the driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System, driver and front passenger knee airbags, and front and rear Roll-sensing Side Curtain Airbags.
Active head restraints for the front seats are designed to move up and slightly forward during a rear-end collision to help reduce the risk of whiplash. Additional standard safety features include a Tire Pressure Monitor System (with individual tire location alert on most grades).
