Paralympian Snowboarder Amy Purdy's Adaptive Action Sports Receives the Ultimate ‘Lift’ from Toyota

[Here at Burien Toyota, we are proud to be a part of a company that supports many worthy causes, including this one that supports wounded veterans]

The Partnership Allows For Expansion of AAS Programs That Support Wounded Veterans

Paralympian snowboarder Amy Purdy’s Adaptive Action Sports (AAS) will get a jump-start from Toyota, beginning today.  Toyota and AAS are expanding their partnership, which will allow AAS to host 10 competitive para-snowboard events for wounded veterans by the end of 2015.

“At Toyota, we believe in the spirit of adventure, innovation and going places, and enjoy collaborating with partners that feel the same way,” said Keith Dahl, corporate manager of engagement marketing. “Adaptive Action Sports embodies a similar spirit and serves as a great example of an organization that is helping others go places they haven’t been before.”

AAS, based in Copper Mountain, Colorado, and co-founded by U.S. Paralympic snowboarder Amy Purdy, allows disabled children, young adults and wounded veterans to compete in action sports. Its core principle is that action sports encourage individuality and creativity in participants, while building independence and self-confidence.

Purdy has been a member of Team Toyota, comprising 19 athletes, since 2012, and is herself a double-amputee who began to snowboard seven months after receiving prosthetics at the age of 19. She recently received much acclaim for winning a bronze medal at the 2014 Paralympic Games and for her second place finish on the hit television show Dancing With the Stars, capturing the heart of millions of Americans along the way.

“My impetus for starting AAS was to give others the chance to see the path I followed to get here: from my hospital bed, to the Paralympics medal podium, to Dancing With the Stars,” said Purdy. “If someone who has been born with a congenital abnormality, lost a leg, or suffered a brain injury succeeds at snowboarding or skateboarding, they will believe that they have the ability to conquer other challenges and truly be ready live beyond their limits. We appreciate Toyota’s enthusiastic support in helping even more people go beyond their limits, to really go places.”

To date, Toyota has provided AAS with a mobility Sienna minivan that the non-profit organization used to transfer athletes to and from its training facility in Colorado. The expanded partnership will allow the organization to continue this effort, while also growing its services to veterans.

Toyota Is Sole Automaker To Be Named One Of DiversityInc's Top 50 Companies For Diversity

Toyota climbs 10 spots over last year
DiversityInc named Toyota one of its Top 50 Companies for Diversity(R) in 2014, marking Toyota's eighth appearance on the list since 2006. Toyota is the only automaker in the Top 50, placing at no. 38 of 1,215 companies vying for inclusion. Toyota moved up 10 spots over 2013, reflecting strong corporate diversity and inclusion initiatives as well as promotion among its associates, business partners, dealers and customers.
"We are honored to once again be included as a Top 50 Company for Diversity by DiversityInc," said Jim Lentz, Chief Executive Officer, Toyota North America. "There is a simple truth behind our approach to diversity and inclusion: If we want to build great cars and trucks for the way our customers live, Toyota will strive to be a reflection of the America in which we live."
"Earning a spot on the DITop50 proves that management is paying close attention to the needs of their primary constituents--employees, customers and other key stakeholders," said DiversityInc founder and CEO, Luke Visconti.
The DiversityInc list recognizes businesses for their ongoing commitments to diversity in four primary areas: Talent Pipeline, Equitable Talent Development, CEO/Leadership Commitment and Supplier Diversity. Highlights of Toyota's recent corporate diversity and inclusion improvements include:

-- The percentage of total employees participating in mentoring programs has
nearly doubled since 2013

-- A commitment, equaling more than 40 percent of all philanthropic
endeavors, to supporting ethnic, LGBT, veterans and disability nonprofit
groups

-- A 99.99 percent diverse supplier retention rate

-- More than $100 million in contracts with minority business enterprises
generated since 2009 through the Toyota-hosted Opportunity Exchange for
Minority Owned Businesses, which is in its 24th year
Previously, Toyota was honored as the "Top Company for Employee Engagement" by DiversityInc in October 2013. It also received recognition as a Top 10 Company for LGBT Employees. Additionally, Toyota is a member of The Billion Dollar Roundtable, which recognizes businesses with more than $1 billion in annual spending with certified ethnic and women-owned suppliers.

2014 Toyota Sienna is a Must-Drive for Minivan Buyers

We love the 2014 Toyota Sienna. Lots of people love the 2014 Toyota Sienna. And for good reason. Lots of good reasons, actually.

This AutoTrader.com article does a great job outlining 5 reasons why you should drive the 2014 Toyota Sienna from Burien Toyota before buying any minivan or other family vehicle.

1. Versatile Interior: "The Sienna comes with 8-passenger seating by default, with available second-row captain's chairs for a 7-seat layout. But on high-end models, you can enjoy second-row lounge seats with integrated ottomans for a true first-class experience. And the Sienna can swallow 150 cu ft. of cargo, so it doubles as a pretty decent moving van."
2. Available All-Wheel Drive: "Here's a fun fact: The Sienna is the only minivan with optional AWD. It's the only way to get minivan functionality along with the surefootedness of an SUV."
3. Tech-tastic: "The Sienna's optional rear-seat entertainment system has a super-cool split-screen function, allowing some of the kids to play a video game while the others watch a movie. The adults get some toys, too, including Entune mobile-app integration with the optional touchscreen navigation system."
4. Proven V-6: "If you have any doubt that this is the best engine in any minivan, consider that Lotus uses essentially the same V6 in the exotic Evora sports car."
5. Relaxing Drive: "This van loves to cruise in comfort, and it keeps every passenger isolated from the elements."

"The 2014 Toyota Sienna is simply the best minivan with the best options," said Ted Klarich, general sales manager at Burien Toyota. "If you want functionality, an amazing drive, and technology, look no further than the 2014 Toyota Sienna and come down to Burien Toyota to take it for a test drive so you can really get an idea of what it's all about."

Whether you want to plug in, head out or launch that weather balloon for a school project, the 2014 Toyota Sienna can help. With its available wide-screen Dual-View Entertainment Center for the kids, and sports sedan feel and sleek styling for the grown-ups, road time feels like play time to everyone. Sienna has enough power, space and style to take your family and friends anywhere.

And of course the safety features of the 2014 Toyota Sienna are second to none, including Toyota's STAR safety system.

See all of the 2014 Toyota Sienna's features here and stop by Burien Toyota today to take one for a test drive!

Meaning Behind the Toyota Emblem

What do you see in that badge glimmering from your driveway?  While it may simply look like a tangle of ovals, Toyota's logo is actually assembled with incredible attention to detail.  Let’s explore beneath the surface of Toyota’s iconic emblem and uncover the significance that’s not so obvious at first glance.

The Toyota emblem is made of three overlapping ellipses; which signify key points in Toyota’s creed, respectfully.  One stands for the heart of the customer; one for the Toyota product, and the other for the great technological advances the company has made.  All of these attributes intersect (both in the emblem and the company itself) to make up the foundation of the emblem and, therefore, Toyota as a whole.  Pretty cool, huh?

How to Clean Your Car the Right Way

Proper Washing

1. Wash the wheels and tires first. If you splash wheel cleaners or dirt onto your vehicle, you can simply wash it off as you wash your vehicle. Use a cleaner that is safe for all wheels, like Wolfgang Tire & Wheel Cleaner. It is water-based and has no corrosive chemicals, which is safer for coated wheels and rubber. Agitate with a wheel brush to clean wheels without scratching. Wash each wheel and tire one at a time and rinse thoroughly before moving on to the next one. NOW EMPTY AND RINSE ALL CLEANING MATERIALS including your Pinnacle Safe Scrub Bug & Tar Sponge and your wash bucket.

2. Now you’re ready to wash. Let’s start with clean water and a freshly rinsed container and our Micro-chenille Wash Mitt. It’s important to use a car wash that is rich in lubricants. The purpose of the car wash is to remove contaminants and lubricate them so they do not scratch the paint as they slide off the vehicle. Dish detergents are not ideal because they remove protective coatings. P21S Bodywork Conditioning Shampoo, DP Auto Wash and Pinnacle Bodywork Shampoo are all fantastic choices. They do not remove wax and provide ample lubrication of gritty particles.

3. How do you prevent swirl marks? Use two buckets. Fill one bucket with soapy water and fill the other with clean water. Each time you’re ready to reload your sponge with soapy water, dip it in the clean water first, to rinse out the grit and contamination you’ve just removed from your vehicle. Then dip it in the soapy water and continue washing.

An even better option is the Grit Guard. This plastic grid sits in the bottom of a 5-gallon wash bucket and stabilizes the water. Contamination and particles settle to the bottom of the bucket and the clean wash water remains at the top.

4. Always rinse your vehicle thoroughly before you begin washing in order to remove loose debris. Then begin washing at the top of the vehicle. Wash down the vehicle as opposed to front to back. Remember that the lower panels are dirtiest. You want to clean the windows and the upper panels before cleaning the lower half of the vehicle so that you don’t transfer grit to the top half of the vehicle. Rinse and reload your Sponge often to prevent cross-contamination. Rinse your vehicle frequently as you work, especially in hot weather.

For stubborn spots, like bugs or tar, use the Pinnacle Safe Scrub Bug & Tar Sponge to gently remove sticky contaminants without scratching. To soften the sponge, soak it in warm water for 3 minutes. Always use it with soapy water to lubricate the sponge. If you choose to use a spot cleaner, spray it on before washing and reapply wax to the treated area after you’ve dried the vehicle.

5. When rinsing, you don’t have to blast your car clean with the water hose. Free-flowing water (no nozzle) will allow the water to sheet off of your vehicle for a more thorough rinsing.
