Gone in Sixty Seconds: Americans Take Home a Camry Every Minute in May

On average, Americans drove away in a new Camry every minute in the month of May. Nearly 50,000 owners placed their trust in Camry’s safety, reliability and long-term value.

“There’s a reason Americans choose Camry, and it shows in sales month after month,” said Bob Carter, vice president of automotive operations for Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. “It’s America’s best-selling car, but more important is the one Camry in the customer’s driveway. The one Camry that gets you and your family to work, school, vacation, the Camry that works in a business enterprise, the one Camry you trust to be reliable and help keep your family safe.”

Recently, Camry’s quality was affirmed by top honors in the JD Power and Associates IQS and VDS studies. It was also awarded a 5-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, was placed on the “Best Midsize Car for the Money” list by US News and World Report and “Most Popular” list by Edmunds.

Of the 10.3 million Camrys sold in the U.S. in the last 31 years, more than 6.7 million are still on the road. Today, every Camry sold in North America comes from plants in Indiana and Kentucky, manufactured by more than 7,000 skilled U.S. workers who take pride in every Camry that rolls off the line.

Camry May sales of 49,584 units were up over 26 percent, topping its segment by almost 10,000 units. To put it into perspective, Camry has exceeded monthly sales of 50,000 units only four other times in its history.

America’s best-selling car will get even better, as the redesigned 2015 Camry comes to market later this year aimed at satisfying thousands, one customer at a time.

Maintenance Questions You're Afraid to Ask

We've all been there-- you have a question about something basic...but you don't ask it.  Chances are, someone else has been where you are and had the same confusion!  Here are some frequently asked questions (with answers!) about maintaining your car.

How often do I need to change the oil in my vehicle?

There are many variables that determine how often an oil change is needed (climate, drive time, highway or city street driving, etc.) You should refer to the Scheduled Maintenance section in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

Should I consider using synthetic motor oil in my vehicle?

Synthetic motor oils can be a good choice for high output, turbocharged or supercharged engines. Or for vehicles that are used for towing (especially during hot weather), and vehicles that operate in extremely cold or hot climates. Although more expensive than mineral-based oils, synthetic motor oils can improve fuel economy and provide longer intervals between changes.

How often should I rotate my tires?

Your tires should be rotated every other oil change. Neglecting to rotate tires is a major cause of premature tire wear.

Is it really necessary to replace my timing belt at the recommended interval?

YES. The failure of a timing belt in many cars can result in major engine damage. The cost of repairing an engine with a broken timing belt is much greater than the cost of a timing belt replacement.

Have more questions?  Give us a call!  We'd love to talk to you.

Bolder and Better for Summer: 2015 Scion FR-S Improves Dynamics and Appearance

Everybody wants to look and feel their best for summer and the 2015 Scion FR-S is no exception. The new model year FR-S features enhanced tuning and improved looks while the 2015 tC sports coupe receives new colors and a sporty feature to bring on the summer fun. Both models will go on sale in early June with new manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP).

“We’re happy to bring the FR-S and tC into a new model year with features and prices that will excite our customers,” Scion Vice President Doug Murtha said. “These two siblings come ready for drivers to make them their own and conquer new roads wherever they go.”

Scion FR-S

The FR-S is known for its outstanding dynamics, which are taken to a new level for 2015.  The 2015 Scion FR-S features better handling and stability thanks to a more rigid front suspension and re-tuning of the rear shock absorbers. The improved damping results in less body roll and a more communicative driving experience.

For better aerodynamics, the smooth look of a shark-fin antenna replaces the pole antenna found in previous models. The exhaust tips are now larger and more flush with the rear bumper. Inside the vehicle, drivers will notice the addition of auto on/off headlights and an updated interior panel with a carbon fiber look, as well as a new key design.

The 2015 Scion FR-S MSRP is $24,900 with a six-speed manual transmission or $26,000 with a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management® technology. Steel replaces Argento as a sleek silver color and Whiteout has been replaced by Halo, a pearl white available for an additional $395 fee.

Scion tC

Inside all 2015 tC vehicles with automatic transmissions drivers will now enjoy steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters to enhance the sporty driving experience. Also for 2015 are two new colors; Cosmic Gray replaces Classic Silver and Super White has been replaced by Blizzard Pearl, which is available for an additional $395 fee.

The 2015 Scion tC MSRP is $19,210 with a six-speed manual transmission or $20,360 with a six-speed automatic transmission and Dynamic Rev Management® technology.

2014 Toyota Camry is Great for More than "Grocery Shopping"

We loved this commercial that takes unsuspecting riders on a 2014 Toyota Camry roller coaster.

They interviewed everyone before they entered the car the 2014 Toyota Camry to ask them what they thought of the Camry. Most said something along the lines of that it was a good car, none of them mentioned performance ("not exciting" according to one guy), and someone even said it was a good car "for going grocery shopping."

I think that last guy got an extra special ride from the driver. But the bottom line was the same for everyone: the 2014 Toyota Camry has impressive performance and drive, one that will make most drivers really happy.

What makes the 2014 Toyota Camry roller-coaster worth?

  • An optional V-6 engine on the frame will get up and go quite nicely (understatement alert)
  • It has paddle shifters
  • Sports Handling
"This is clearly a driver’s car — and while SE’s focus is on performance, its technologically advanced engine choices won’t make you pay extra at the pump. Add sport-tuned suspension to the mix, and you have an impressive blend of performance and efficiency."

Stop by Burien Toyota today to find out how the 2014 Toyota Camry can do more for you than just take you grocery shopping (although that is still a perfectly acceptable way to use the car).

Toyota Renotifies Owners of Certain Previously Recalled Vehicles

Toyota and Burien Toyota has a deep commitment to consumer safety, so we are taking this opportunity to let Toyota drivers know about this recall that may or may not affect you. If you have any questions about the recall, please don't hesitate to use the contact information at the bottom of the article or Burien Toyota. Of course, any vehicle brought to Burien Toyota that requires repair as a result of this recall will be done so free of charge to the owner and in a prompt and respectful manner.

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. today announced that it will renotify owners of certain vehicles involved in an April 2013 safety recall for the front passenger airbag inflators installed in several models.  Toyota is modifying the remedy procedure.

The 2013 recall remedy involved inspection of the front passenger air bag, and if equipped with an affected inflator, the inflator would be replaced with a newly manufactured one at no charge to the owner.

Toyota has determined that the involved serial numbers provided by the supplier were incomplete, and did not include all of the potentially involved inflators.

For vehicles which were inspected and did not receive a replacement inflator, Toyota will re-notify the owners and replace the inflator with a new one.

For vehicles which have not received the 2013 recall remedy previously, Toyota is changing the remedy from "inspect and replace the inflator if it is involved" to "replace the inflator with a new one.".

The involved vehicles were equipped with front passenger airbag inflators which could have been assembled with improperly manufactured propellant.  Improperly manufactured propellant could cause the inflator to rupture and the front passenger airbag to deploy abnormally in the event of a crash.

Approximately 766,300 vehicles in the US were covered by the 2013 recall, including vehicles that were previously inspected and already received a replacement inflator.  This recall involves certain Model Year 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, and Tundra; certain Model Year 2002-2004 Sequoia; and certain Model Year 2002-2004 Lexus SC 430 coupes.

Owners of vehicles subject to this safety recall will receive an owner notification letter by first class mail.

Detailed information is available to customers at www.toyota.com/recall, the Toyota Customer Experience at 1 800-331-4331, www.lexus.com/recall and Lexus Customer Satisfaction (1 800-255-3987).

Buffalo and Bears and Batteries – Oh My! Toyota Brings Power to Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone...Where the Deer and the Antelope and the Prius Play

[Here in the Pacific Northwest, home of Burien Toyota, we know the value of the great outdoors the opportunity for appreciation and recreation that our state and national parks provide. Here is a great example of how Toyota is getting involved with the nation's oldest national park, Yellowstone.]

The nation’s oldest National Park is ready for some new power.  Toyota Camry hybrid batteries will soon power the Lamar Buffalo Ranch field campus in Yellowstone National Park.  It’s a new lease on life for the batteries and new, zero emission, energy option for the Park.  Now that’s a “bear-able” solution!

The stationary distributed energy system will feature 208 used Camry Hybrid nickel-metal hydride battery packs and a total storage capacity of 85 kWh, more than enough pluck to power the five buildings on the Ranch field campus.

Solar panels and onsite micro-hydro turbine systems will generate the renewable electricity stored within the battery packs, creating a sustainable, off-the-grid power source for one of the most remote and pristine places in the U.S.  Scheduled for installation this fall, the state-of-the-art system will create no emissions in generation, storage or distribution of power for the campus.

While the used hybrid battery packs featured in the system aren’t up for daily drives, they’re not ready to be put out to pasture either.  This type of reuse is expected to double the overall life span of the hybrid batteries.  It’s important to note that if a used hybrid battery pack is not suitable for reuse, Toyota’s established hybrid battery recycling program takes the reins.

The Lamar Buffalo Ranch project is just the latest example of Toyota hybrid batteries making an encore.  Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama is testing a similar project to help power their operations and provide back-up power during emergencies.  Toyota dealers in Japan have been tapping into used hybrid battery packs for stationary power storage since 2013.

In addition to the batteries and engineering know-how, Toyota recently donated a RAV4 and $50,000 to the Yellowstone Park Foundation (www.ypf.org), the fundraising arm of Yellowstone National Park, to support Lamar Buffalo Ranch sustainability projects.  While not the most famous part of the park, the Lamar Buffalo Ranch is one of the oldest and most historic areas in Yellowstone. The Ranch houses facilities for education and research.

More details on the system will be revealed when Toyota flips the switch this fall.  In the meantime, to learn more about Yellowstone National Park sustainability initiatives please visit http://www.nps.gov/yell/parkmgmt/sustainability-contents.htm.

Toyota and National Center for Families Learning Announce Second Round of Toyota Family Learning Grants

Past grant recipients have ventured beyond the classroom and into the community, clocking thousands of hours of family learning and service

Toyota and the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) today announced that community programs across the nation can submit initial applications for the prestigious Toyota Family Learning grants, which recognize innovation in engaging families in learning.

The three-year, $175,000 grants are a part of Toyota Family Learning’s pioneering movement to provide opportunities for children and parents to learn together by funding new service learning and family mentor programs. Five organizations will be awarded a grant, in addition to a wide range of NCFL training, communication and technical support, learning items and materials.

Over the course of Toyota Family Learning’s six-year initiative, 15 grants will be awarded. The first round of five grantees included Houston Public Library, Lincoln Public Schools, and community programs from California, New York and Rhode Island. In less than six months, these program participants have:

  • Worked as families to serve their communities—activities include visiting senior citizens, beautifying local parks and packaging food for the homeless;
  • Completed approximately 17,000 hours of learning together as a family and as a community;
  • Reported gains in participating parents’ organizational skills, leadership skills, and levels of self-efficacy;
  • Seen an increase in father involvement in literacy activities with their families child’s school;
  • Reported that families are more likely to use technology for educational purposes; and
  • Reported that families are more likely to interact with their child’s school.

“The biggest impact comes from the whole family committing to positive and sustained involvement in learning,” said Emily Kirkpatrick, vice president of NCFL. “We’re pleased with the results we’ve seen from the first Toyota Family Learning Grant recipients and eager to expand the implementation network through this RFP.”

“Toyota’s more than 20 years of partnership with the NCFL has taught us that bringing parents and children together to learn works,” said Mike Goss, vice president of external affairs for Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc.  “That’s why we are so excited to announce the second round of the Toyota Family Learning Grants and proud to support programs across the country that extend learning beyond the four walls of the classroom and into homes and communities.”

Schools, libraries and other community-based organizations that provide services to families are eligible to apply. Initial applications are being accepted now through June 23 at www.toyotafamilylearning.org. Submissions will be evaluated on a number of factors, including strength of existing services, commitment from community partners, and strength and innovation of proposal. A select group of organizations will be asked to submit full applications in July, and award recipients will be notified in August.

In addition to the funding grants, Toyota Family Learning is committed to engaging families online, offline, and on the go with tools like Family Time Machine, a website that helps parents and kids make better use of every moment in the day. More information about Toyota Family Learning can be found here.

Best Beach Vacation Spots in the Pacific Northwest

Alki Beach, West Seattle, Washington

Located about 15 miles west of downtown Seattle, this two-and-a-half mile stretch of sand runs from Alki Point to Duwamish Head on Elliott Bay. It is easily reached by car via the West Seattle Bridge.

Best beach vacation spot for: Beachcombers.

Why it's great: A lot of Seattle-area beaches are covered in rocks and shells, but this beauty is covered in powdery sand with seawalls for walking and people watching. You'll love the stunning views of the Seattle skyline, Olympic and Cascade Mountains and Puget Sound.

Don't miss: During busy summer months, avoid parking problems and take Seattle Metro's water taxi, which leaves from between Piers 55 and 56.

South Beach, San Juan Islands, Washington

Located on American Camp on the south side of San Juan Island, this driftwood haven is reached via a short flight from Seattle or a 90 minute drive to Anacortes terminal and then a scenic ferry ride.

Best beach vacation spot for: Anyone seeking a slow paced "time out."

Why it's great: It's the longest stretch of public beach in the San Juan Islands and locals are especially outgoing in sharing their beachfront beauty.

Don't miss: Work off the effects of a beach barbecue with a short hike along the bluff trails to the Hudson's Bay Farm site above Grandma's Cove.

Long Beach, Tofino, Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada

Getting to Long Beach can be tricky, but the trek is well worth it. Sound Flight offers regular flights from Seattle. It is also possible to take a ferry from Washington State to Victoria and then drive five hours across Vancouver Island to reach the tip of the Esowista Peninsula.

Best beach vacation spot for: Surfers.

Why it's great: With 35 kilometers of perfect beach break, Long Beach is somewhat of a cult surfing destination. It's popular year round – in summer for surfing and water sports, in winter for windswept storm-watching.

Don't miss: Participate in a grey whale observation tour led by a park naturalist. Start at the Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre – the entrance is adjacent to Hwy 4 at the end of Long Beach Rd.

#EpicMoments with Toyota and Hunter Kemper

Toyota is a proud sponsor of athletes who achieve epic moments on the big stage...and also epic moments privately, with the family.

That is the idea behind this two minute spot featuring Hunter Kemper who, honestly, was not someone we were very familiar with. But we understood the concept that sometimes epic moments are very public and sometimes they are the quiet ones you share with your family.

Toyota will help reach all those epic moments whether it's with the Toyota Prius to get you better gas mileage or the Toyota Highlander to take your family on that epic vacation.

And then we did some research on Hunter Kemper and understood why Toyota would sponsor him and why it's a great partnership. According to his website: "Hunter Kemper is the most decorated U.S. triathlete in history. A four-time member of the USA Olympic triathlon team, he is one of only two men in the world to qualify for every Olympic triathlon (2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012) and the only man in the world to complete all four. Kemper has won seven USA Triathlon Elite National Championships."

He is currently training and aiming for an epic FIFTH Olympics in 2016. And with Toyota, he can get all those epic moments to reach those 2016 Olympics.

Stop by Burien Toyota and find out how the right Toyota can get you to all your epic moments, the big ones and the small ones.

Toyota is Longest Lasting Brand

There is often a debate about which top-named auto brands have the vehicles that last the longest and they have determined that Toyota is the longest lasting brand, or brand of vehicles that generally last the longest. Mojo Motors, a classified ad website that has access to tons of data, came up with it's conclusion.

Here's how they determined that Toyota was top-dog: "Who wants a car that’s “worthless?” Maybe you should. The key is, how many miles can you get out of it before a car or truck reaches that point? By that measure,Toyota makes the longest-lasting cars and trucks, at an average of more than 200,000 miles."

Mojo Motors analyzed tons of data to determine at which point a vehicle reached its "worthless" point. For Toyotas, it was 210,705 miles. Honda was the only other brand that had more than 200,000 miles before it theoretically became worthless (although they don't really become worth nothing, they used that as a way to use the large amount of data).

"This really says a lot about Toyota vehicles," said Ted Klarich, general sales manager at Burien Toyota. "This is an objective study of data that proves Toyotas simply last longer than any other vehicle before they become "worthless." This means you can drive your used Toyota longer or get a new Toyota and have incredible resale value. Excellent reasons to by a new or used Toyota from Burien Toyota."

Stop by Burien Toyota and check out the incredible pre-owned Toyotas and new Toyotas to see which one fits best for you!
